the idea behind having a large cartridge is to push a heavier bullet, if your shooting under 500 yards, shoot what ever you desire, for that matter why not just use a 300 win mag, I have a 300 rum and have favored the 210 bergers and have been experimenting with the 230g otm tactical bergers. they have a slightly thicker jacket but seem to expand well from the tests I have done. a lot of guys have had good success with them in the states. I find the heavier the bullet is a lot more forgiving when it comes to seating depths also, especially in vlds, a 180g vld doesn't have a lot of bearing surface for the rifling. with a 30-378 I would be 200g+ every time, pushing a 180g really fast isn't as effective as a 200g 200fps slower given the higher bc it will carry its speed longer and have less wind effects.
if you go the route of picking a lighter bullet 180 and lower, and don't shoot long range, do yourself a favour and shoot a bullet that isn't designed to expand rapidly, barnes triple shock would be good. I know a speed freak who built a 7mm rum with a 30 inch barrel and was shooting a 140g ballistic tip. he hit the front shoulder of a mule deer at 50 yards and the deer got away. bullets like that just explode on impact in short range pushing 3500+ MV with little to no penetration. imagine shooting a deer with bird shot close range. not so effective
I suggest h50bmg or retumbo powder. a lot of people don't use h50, why? I have no idea. it doesn't show to be the best under quick load, but the quickload creator even admits hodgons didn't give the most accurate info on their powder for the program, I default all my hodgons using adi. there is a conversion chart on adi's website as they make the powder and hodgons slaps their name on it. h50bmg = adi ar2218
