Went to look at a Krag last night. Supposed to be complete and very good to excellant condition. Well it was and it wasn't. Rifle was a 1898 with uncut barrel. The bore and metal were OK (blueing wore but no pits etc) The handguard was missing and the fore stock shortened. It also had 4 screw holes in the wood on the side of the grip. I assume for some type of receiver site installation. It would require new wood and barrel bands to restore. Is it possible to find these parts and where? I'm interested in the gun but not at the original asking price. The owner had got a value for an unaltered version.
I realize that this is not a common rifle in Canada but would look good beside my O3-A3 and Garand.
Thanks for any help

Not many parts for 'em in Canada. If any. You might find some parts at a gun show if you get lucky.
Parts can be had Stateside, but not easily. Gunparts has some(and an exploded drawing. At least you'll know what they parts look like). They don't appear to have any stock parts though. $15.70US for the middle barrel band. They're sold out of the front bands. $31.45 each when they have 'em. 1896 parts will go on an 1898.
The real problem is that the ammo is only loaded on a seasonal basis by Remington and Winchester. Including brass.
