A pal just picked up a very nice Win 95 in 30-40K. We took it to the range at Hanna and had a great time shooting. A collection of old ammo was, to say the least, interesting. A half dozen different bullet types & brands. Lots of hang fire with the old ammo. When you hit one of the gongs there was no question about it. It will make a great hunting gun & fun plinking once we get some loads worked up. (sorry no pics)

I picked up one of the same last year. Although the gun was not what the seller said I kept it and got a deer with it. The front sight must have been swapped out for a shorter one as the sedate 220gr loads I had for my Springfield Krag shoot high in this one even with the sights set low as possible.

How long is the barrel on that one?
 
The only downside to the .30-40 Krag is the availability of ammo and brass. Both Winchester and Remington only load it and make brass "seasonally". Never been able to find out just what "season".
"...the old ammo..." If it was milsurp, it's likely corrosively primed too. Not if it was old commercial ammo.
 
On the bright side 30-40 can be easily made from 303B.
It is as good as a deer-bear-moose gun as one can get.
& standard 308 bullets are readily available in all weights.
 
Had a look in my Western Ammunition handbook from `37, it lists all their load specs in there, I was suprised to find the 180gr at 2500 at the muzzle. Not to get a big argument going on that subject due to using old firearms. just saying........ it was nipping on the heels of the 308 Winchester, if they had both been common at the same time.

My Springfield was a great shooter and I have high hopes for the 1895 and that long pipe.
