I'm currently looking for a new mid sized .30 cal. I have a .243 in a BLR I use regularly for the smaller game and rely heavily on a .338 Win Mag for everything else. I am looking for a mid ranged gun. I know the benefits of the .30-06 as I have owned one in a BLR and had issues with it but it shot straight. I also know the benefits of the .300 Win Mag and .300 WSM.

Any insight on the TC .30 cal or any of the .28 cals etc.

Thanks

.300 WSM harder hitting than .300 Win Mag?

300WSM. Less recoil than the 300 Win Mag with flatter trajectory and harder hitting.

Harder hitting???

NAA.

I'd go for a .30-06. It's a very versatile cartridge because you can shoot bullets ranging from 110-220 Grains and your barrel will last longer than the magnums. If you reload using bullets of the same weight, the .30-06 near max. load is a medium load in a .300 Win. Mag. or .300 WSM. You also might not like the exponential increase in recoil of the .30 magnums for the meager gain over the .30-06.

300 WSM with the same load has more energy than 300 Win Mag

for conversation, i have twice witnessed 300 WSM 180 grain factory loads chronograph faster than 300 Win Mag 180 grain factory loads.

.308, .30-06. .300WM, .300Wby, .300H&H, .300WSM, .300RSAUM, .300RUM (what did I miss anal retentives?)

Impossible to beat the old faithful .30-06.

I have 2 '06's and a .300H&H. I have no interest in any of the other .300 mags and no need for a .308, but they are all fine.

Any of 'em will do, but only do as well as the shooter...

This guy totally has it bang on and couldn't of said it better myself. Their is no thanks button in this forum so I'm saying thanks for the useful post.

Try running them both over a chronograph, through the same length barrel, then get back to us. For all intents and purposes, they are identical ballistically. Then try walking into the Canadian Tire in Podunk AB and asking for WSM ammo. - dan

I would love to give that a try but I don't have a 300 Win Mag and borrowing one and cutting a 2-3" off the barrel to match the 300WSM length is not popular. I live in Southern Ontario where we can't even hunt with something larger than a 275 and my CDN Tire has 300WSM ammo. That is a Crappy Tire.

Wow! one of the most interesting things about this site is reading the suttle differences from province to province. Manitoba is just no rim fire.

Okay, I'll be the anal retentive on this one: the .303 is actually .311 caliber...

Totally got me on that one bud, can we say, BURNT!!! :D
