I had stayed away from wildcats for years because I always thought forming the cases was a right pain. Needing to create 7 TCU out of .223, and 7 Int Rimmed out of .30.30 disabused me of that worry. So when the chance to buy a .30 Herrett barrel came along, I jumped at it. Admittedly, .30 Herrett takes more than just neck sizing and fire-forming but it was still simple, and fun. Only thing I might do differently would be to buy new .30-30 brass, instead of creating empty brass through my Marlin 336.
Yeah, you have to size it down to the new shortened case, trim it, and turn the neck, but like most rifle cases in the Contender, they last a long time, and they are a hoot to shoot. Remember, this cartridge was used in the early days of IHMSA to pop rams at 200m standing, and Creedmore style. Put a pistol scope on it and shoot it supported, and you will amaze the blasters and gamers at the range. If you have gongs at your range, it will ring a six or ten incher all day long, until the recoil makes you wince!
And, if you get the chance to take it south, it is a decent black bear/deer cartridge.
Just for s****s and giggles, I would like to get my hands on a .357 Herrett barrel and give that a shot.
