300 AAC Blackout bolt-action

Well All I can do is compare 2 really nice bench guns that I use with cast bullets, a .300 Whisper and a .30 BR., and under most all instances and loads both sonic and subsonic, the .30 BR. is more accurate and flexible then the Whisper. The BR case design just seems to be better for the .30 cal...and for the Whisper you really have to watch for quick pressure spikes, ask me how I know.

It's a 30 cal barrel, 308 kinda denoted the chamber case. 300 AAC/whisper is a shortened 223 blown out to 30 cal. Think 7.62 x 35.

So if I am following this correctly; I just have to buy a .223 gun and switch the barrel to a .308 barrel?

Don't I need to reamer the chamber or something?

Ok, I'm game. So, how do you know? Sounds like an interesting story.

.30BR is great if you have a .308 Win. bolt face. If you've got a .221FB/.223 Rem. bolt face, then the .300 Blk. is the obvious choice. If you plan on shooting .30 cal. bullets in an AR-15, the Blackout is the only option between the (2) cartridges.

I agree but the OP was talking about chambering in a bolt action, and for those with the .308 bolthead, this may be a better choice. A very astute reloader/experimenter and myself have had cases blow out at the bottom, from loads that were taken from the computer. In both cases, just some smoke and crap escaped, I had to replace the 700extractor. I was using Titegroup and weighing every charge, this is the first and only time it has happened in 50 years of reloading and it was whisper(and still is). I think that the small case and very large bullet, make it very dicey for experimentation.

Hmmmm, this is something I have not encountered. My experience has been the 300 is very tolerant of all kinds of bullet weights and powders.

just pricing out the reamer and some blanks...

Any updates?

I ordered a set of forster dies from Mystic Precision, my action is ready to go on the workbench as we speak but I am still torn between a stock and optics.

Anyone have any experience with the choate tactical stock and or the choate adjustable tactical stock? Mind you there is a piece of black/black laminate beside the duplicator screaming to be cut into a stock and getting some metal attached :D

reamer and blanks ordered, will offer several lengths of bbls and some pretty good deals on them as well, for the short ones especially. If I can get 2 bbls per blank it will cut the cost way down. I can offer forester dies cheaper then you are likely to find anywhere in Canada, if someone wants a package deal with dies I can make it happen.
