I happen to have a couple boxes of Hornady 300 g hollow points in 458. Has anyone ever tried these in a 458 wm at 2700 fps. Should be an explosive varmint combo

The Hornady 300 grain hollow point is designed for velocities between 1600 to 2100 fps so at 2700 fps the bullet will most likely be explosive and come unglued. I had a 45-70 and fired these 300 grain bullets at a target fastened to a eight inch diameter tree, and when the third shot was fired the tree fell over. :)

If your varmints are that big in Canada I would recommend the Hornady 500 soft point.

All joking aside I would use my .223 with much lighter bullets for varmints and not worry about ricochets.

My two cents.

More for just fun but a handful in my pocket while hunting in case I see a coyote close by.
I suppose I could download them for deer hunting

Do they hold together at 45/70 velocities

A 300 grain pill moving at 2700fps would be in the same ballpark as a 338 Lapua Mag. I'm not an expert, but I would think that round would vaporize "a coyote close by".

I carried a Ruger No.3 carbine single shot in 45-70 for three years hoping to shoot a deer with it and never did. I got tired of holding two extra 45-70 rounds between my freezing fingers and went back to my 30-06 760 Gamemaster and gloves on both hands.

I did fire a Hornady 500 grain bullet from my 5 1/2 pound Ruger No.3 carbine and ended up with the worst blood nose I have ever had. It had to do the Newtons third law and a thumb too close to my nose. I kept the bullet in the photo to remind me to never do that again. And there is nothing worse than being at the range shoving cleaning patches up your nose to help stop the bleeding.

I've loaded my double rifle in 45/70 pretty hot and it's light. The torque of the barrels causes the stock to slap you in the cheek when the right barrel is fired. I haven't tried the 300 gr bullets in I yet due to it being regulated with the 405 gr

I'll have to do some testing to see how these 300s hold up to higher velocity
