Well I just picked up a Ruger #1 in 300H&H, took it out tonight for a first blast,
Really like it, its my first single shot, about a 1" group's at 100m, set 2" high, Happy with that.
Factory Hornardy, 180 gr bonded, was all I can get my hands on.
Seams to have a typical Ruger wander, once it get hot, First two shots with in 1/2" three times and the other 1/2 out from there, progressively getting worse drifting up and right as barrel get hot. Just like every other ruger centerfire, I have owned.
Still, I cold barrel fired it four times, and bang on 2" high each time,
Dandy hunting rig.
who else has a classic 300H&H.
 
Terrific cartridge ! I've had a 721 Remington for about 45 years and its put a lot of meat in the freezer.
Its probably the most consistently accurate rifle I have ever owned...
 
I have the same rifle! I use 200 grain accubonds over H4831. Mine doesn't wander much, groups open up a bit when hot, but not like my .280 which throws that third shot high and to the right like yours.
 
...holy cow what a rifle and cartridge!!!

...no, never owned a R1 in 300...but 2 in .375...but a friend (dr.) had one in .375 and another in .300...DON'T ever let go of that gun...and i will guarantee you that if you work up the right load you WILL cloverleaf with it...

(...got rid of mine when i returned north and just feel the need for a repeating bolt if i am serious about moose in my freezer each year...but really all i've ever needed is a single shot...and i still mourn for them)

:)It's a calibre that would fit in well with a number of other calibres of similar vintage I have. However, my intro to the family of 30 cal magnums started out with the 308 Norma Magnum and it still remains as one of my favorite 30 cal magnum. However,;) a 300 H&H isn't out of the lines of 'need' and next on the list. If I could find one to match my Winchester model 70's Super Experss in 375 H&H and 458 WM, how could I resist??????????????????;)
 
...i don't know...it's like i am stuck in some time traveler's vortex...or the beginning of The Lord Of The Rings movie....we just seem to have forgotten...or come down with calibre amnesia... because the .300 H&H is truly great...
 
still would like an old remmy. need the rem to go with my rem 375. that ruger #1 sure looks pretty though. i'm not a win guy either.
 
One rifle comes to mind when pondering the venerable .300 H&H....

Pre '64 Winchester Model 70 :cool:

Yep, one can argue that a big game animal won't care which tool is used to harvest it; but, as an enthusiastic hunter I sure do. Nothing like carrying a well handling, walnut, blued classic rifle while in the field.

NAA: I would love to carry a pre-64 Mod 70 in .300 H&H in the field. I don't know why Winchester doesn't offer a new production Mod 70 in the cartridge, there is certainly a small but enthusiastic market.

There is one for sale on EE right now, Pre 64, Was looking at it half seriously, but just bought a .17 fireball, and a #1 in 300H&H already past month.
