Does anyone have experience with the 300 H&H? I'm truly thinking of purchasing one in the Ruger #1, Medium Sporter. Would like to hear some feed-back on this grand old cartridge. It appears to be the ballistic twin to the 300 winchester magnum. Thanks in advance!

I always thought a No1 in .300 H&H would be a really classy gun. From what I've read they're not cutting edge accurate from the box but there are tweaks to making them shoot better. Ross Seyfried did an article on them and how to get them shooting better. Nice choice in both rifle and caliber and one that's been playing in my head for a while too.

I've used 300 H&H quite a bit in a couple different rifles. My current rifle is a pre-64 Winchester 70 and I hunt with it quite a bit. Most recently I took it into the mountains up in the north westernmost corner of BC and took a big mountain goat and a really good caribou with a fairly long shot. Balistically it's closer to the 300 WSM than the 300 Win mag but they're all so close you'd never know the difference. I've had no problem getting 3050 fps with a Nosler 180gr Partition out of my rifles 26in barrel and Federal Premium ammunition will do the same. The cartridge is well known for its smooth feeding but that's not really a factor in a Ruger No 1. As far as getting brass goes, it's out there, Nosler makes it, Remington too at least occasionally and I think Federal still makes factory ammunition for it but you'd be best to handload. Once you have a couple hundred brass you're set so who cares after that.

Love the cartridge. I've had several rifles in this caliber and currently a pre-64 model 70 that I plan to use this fall. I regularly find brass at shows and in a pinch you could re-size new .375 H+H brass. I highly recommend it.

I also love the .300 H&H, and have had a number of them. I tend to disagree with the other posters for loading, as I never saw the point of pushing the load, but that is just me. I like to use it much closer to its original loadings, more like a really juicy '06. Be aware that the chambers on H&H's typically have a short throat, though do not have experience with it in the #1, but it has my attention, too.

I also have owned several 300 H&H mags over the years.
It is a grand old chambering, and should be a winner in the #1 Ruger.

I, personally have never had any accuracy issues with this chambering, or the rifles it came in.

Case capacity is practically identical to the 300 WSM, and ballistics bear out the resemblance.
3050 is do-able with the 180, and that makes a pretty potent package!

I shot several moose with the H&H offering, and it works just as expected.

Cases do tend to lengthen with heavier loads, so keep an eye on case separation indications.
Brass is not that hard to come by, and can readily be made from 375 H&H if necessary.

Geez guys, thanks for the great information on your experiences with the 300 H&H. I as well think that a classic rifle such as a Ruger#1 chambered in this grand old classic cartridge would be so nice to hunt with and the nostalgia that goes with it. To resurrect this cartridge to hunt with is something special for me if I go with the package. Thanks again!!!

I've hunted a fair bit with a 300 H & H.
Shot a couple of moose and a couple of caribou. Dandy coyote rifle ;)

But it won't do anything that the countless other 300's do except for nostalgia sakes.

Brass is fairly easy to come by if you keep your eyes open and pull the wallet out quick.

I dont have much knowledge of this cartridge, however a sxs 12 gauge with exhibtion walnut sounds like a better idea......didnt you already have a 30 cal ruger #1???..... :)

Keep the shotgun.....split a cooper or weatherby? What ya think?

Well, I went out and purchased a Ruger #1 Medium Sporter chambered for the 300 H&H. Wood is nice, balance is very good, everything is very nice. One exception is that the trigger is very crude and the locktime is quite lethargic. I will have to send it away for a trigger job and possibly have the forend free floated. I'm a happy camper!

Very sharp rifle Track, thanks for sharing.
There are several options for aftermarket triggers and as far as accuracy is concerned, shoot the rifle before doing any work.
You might be pleasantly surprised...

My friend is having one built on a Stiller action, Pac-Nor barrel and McMillan stock. It should be nice.

Very, very nice.I had been looking for a bolt gun in 300 h&h. Very hard to find so i gave up and bought a kimber super america in .338 win.You have got my interest up again so the search is on.Anybody out there know where one is hiding?thanks and good luck with the new smoke pole

I sure do like the 300 H&H, it's my favorite .300 after the 300WSM. Just for personal likes of course- all the 300's in that range 300WM, 300WSM, 300SAUM, 300RCM, 300WBy, 308 Norma- all pretty much do the same thing. But the 300 H&H is pretty KOOL, and KOOl has lots going for it. ;)
