300 mag

Thinking about putting a muzzle brake on my rifle. Thoughts ? Anybody recommend a gunsmith to do it and aprox cost.

Pro-recoil similar to a 25-06
Con-It will increase muzzle blast.
If it makes you comfortable, use one.
Be considerate of others when you are shooting at a range.
I am not sure on cost but they are relatively inexpensive say 200.00.

Unless you really can't stand the recoil of your 300 I'd avoid a brake. Hard on those around you, especially wile hunting. If it's a recoil issue, get a recoil pad.

My thoughts? If it is a hunting rifle, never put a brake on it. All the reasons are well known, and you know them or you wouldn't have asked the question. If you cannot shoot it because of the recoil, then learn and practice the techniques necessary to handle recoil, or get another chambering that you can shoot more comfortably.

A pure target rifle may benefit from a brake.

before you put a brake on your rifle, I would first consider a stock that fits you properly with a good 1" decelerator pad
its makes a bigger difference than most brakes

If the recoil is uncomfortable, as dero338 says, look at different stocks and recoil pads first.

The reason i say is that the brake makes it much louder, to the point where you may be concerned about really damaging your hearing shooting it depending on how loud (which brake, how long the barrel, what ammo etc.)

Also, I frigging hate guys with brakes at the range, like it seriously ruins your day at the range when the guy next to you has a brake on his magnum, if you use it at the range get a lead sled and dont muzzle brake it. Fricking sissy whistles make it impossible to shoot around them, I'd rather have hot brass from a semi auto sks bouncing off me then a brake'd magnum shooting next to me, everytime your about to squeeze off a shot you get pushed from the air from the other guys muzzle brake, enough to move your shot placement a few inches, gets really frustrating in a hurry...

Double up on your hearing protection at the range, you dont need a muzzle brake while hunting. (NEWS FLASH!) Guns are not quiet anyway.
Use one if it helps you get used to the rifle. Like I said, be respectful of others.

I've got a brake on my .300 wm and I love loud, seriously! I mean it, I occasionally dyno engines that sound particulay great because it turns my crank. I listen to my headphones cranked to the verge of distortion as I ride, I've had competition sound systems that literally blew my windows out occasionally... I'd overheat the amps driving around. I'm the guy that sits by the headers in the jetboat rubbing my crotch. I don't wear protection shooting anything ever. Except...

I am not joking when I say I have fired my rifle exactly 2 times without protection and both times I was wiping my face, looking at my hands for blood thinking I blew my face off. The pain in my ear led me to believe I had suffered a disfiguring incident. The buzzing for a day or 2 after was a great reminder.

Makes the rifle almost useless for hunting purposes. You can't walk around with ear plugs/muffs on, don't always have time to put them on when facing a quick shot. Gotta take a quick defensive shot... Well being deaf for the next few hours may make the walk out a little less than comfortable if you weren't able to visually confirm that hit/kill.
