So my buddies wife just called me, and she wants to buy my buddy a rangefinder for his birthday this week. Her budget is $300. I've never owned one, but from what I have read here, I get the impression $300 will not get anything decent or worth buying. Am I correct on this assumption ?

You are correct that $300 will not get you a quality rangefinder but that being said I used a Bushnell 800 for years with great success before buying a Leica. I did range white birch trees up to 475 yards and game up to 250 yards with the Bushnell. If she would want used I can let her have the Bushnell for a great deal. I am not using it anymore. The Leica in my opinion is the best at any price.

I know myself, I would like a good quality used item rather than a new mediocre one. My suggestion would be to look for a used Leica 1200 because the 1600 is out and people always upgrade and looking to sell their old range finder. Good luck

Before I got my Leica 1200, I used a Bushnell 800 Yardage Pro. When I first got the Leica I was disappointed at how little better it did on difficult targets out 500m. Beyond that, there was no comparison.

I bought a nikon prostaff 550 only because in my area the farthest shot would be 500ish yards.

I can range a fence post at 520 no problem, and saturday ranged a crow at 493.

I paid $290 out the door
