300 Rem ultra mag

i've been shooting 300 winmags for a long time and see no reason to get a rum. if i was going to step up it would be to a 375... but then not everyone lives in griz country. another considerataion is this, although one might not plan on going through a lot of ammo, what if you happen to be hunting in some shathole town and have to resight your scope? what if you need to find more ammo? it is a lot easier to find 300 win mag ammo than 300rum ammo.

RUM not too much

Searching for a 300 RUM in a Browning with no luck, I found a brand new Browning Medallion in 338RUM for $700, couldn't resist. Reload the cartridges myself. I have shot 3 deer with 180GR Accubonds. Had to try it out!
Two at 200yds, dropped both not extra damage, compared to my 7mm rem mag. One at 550yds that I hit in the front shoulder and did unreal damage. It is really humming at that distance. Would still buy a 300 RUM if I could find one in a rifle I like. RUM in any calibre will be fine as long as your bullet placement is good. But it will definately do the job, wayyyyyyyy out there.

Don't be afraid of them.

The rum is a great long range caliber, but make sure you practice alot because owning a 500yd moose rifle doesn't make a person a good 500yd shot.Inside 400yds I don't think it holds much of an adbantage over the 300win mag.

I have a 30-06 & 300RUM, I like both guns but use them for different scenarios. My deer gun is my 30-06 and for moose & bear it is the RUM. I shoot 150 /165 gr in the 30-06 and 180-200gr in the RUM. Where I really like the RUM is it long range capability and knock down power. I am very confident within 300yrds with my 30-06 but with my RUM 500yrds is not out of range and further.......

I've got both a 300 RUM and a 375 RUM and they are fantastic if they end up in a quality stock. Mine are in custom ordered HS Precision stocks with grind to fit limb saver pads on them. FIT is very important with any large recoiling rifle. All of my rifles wear Leupold glass and this is due to many considerations but with the RUM's eye releif is a major one. I stuff Nosler AccuBonds in both in 200g and 265g. Brass life is excellent and readily available. Don't cheap out on good quality scope mounts and rings....Burris dual dovetail signature series rings work well for me.

Due to me starting to like heavy bullets more and the velocities possible with the RUM cartridges I am switching to 200gr in my 300RUM and 300gr in my 375RUM.

I missed this post somehow...

I have to ask how many bullets do you take on a hunt/trip?

Myself I never leave home without at least 50 to 100 rounds for each of my hunting rifles and I never go without at least 2 rifles just in case something were to happen to one of them.

I like to practice longer range and hill side shooting, my club only has a level 300 yard rifle range so when I am in the bush I set up targets out to lasered 400 - 600 yards or on steep hillsides.

Nothing like being able to accurately hit what you are aiming at no matter the terrain or conditions.

If I can't hit at the longer distances I don't shoot at animals at those distances.
