I just purchased a 300rum, the goal is to shoot the mile. When I bought the rifle I also purchased 2 boxes of Remington managed recoil ammo thinking that since the bullets have less powder, there will be less chamber wear and I will have fire formed brass. I have been recently told that I should forgo that idea and just get some high quality brass like Norma or lapua. I guess my question is what is the best way to go about this? Just keep the Remington ammo and fire form it, or just find some Norma or nosler brass and work up a load?

Start with that you have, begin to develop the load and figure out where the rifle is happy. Good brass is great to have and will help with consistency once you get the rifle shooting. Don't worry about throat and chamber erosion, in the beginning, I think 300 RUM is decent on barrels for what it is.

Either shoot the 215 or 230 Berger. Reloading will be your best bet, and will save lots of money. The 300 RUM takes 90 plus grains of powder. I wore out my 300 RUM barrel and will now be re barreling to a 338 EDGE. Another bullet you could look into is the Hornady 225 ELD-M. As far as factory ammo I don't know who makes the best. Applied ballistics, HSM and Gunwerks? When you talk about shooting a mile you are going to need very consistent ammo.

I had good luck with the remington & nosler brass in my 300 rum,I got about 600 rounds thew my barrel when the accuracy went on it.I used 200 gr. accubonds and retumbo.I think it is a great hunting round but as for a target round not so much(barrel life).

I’m runnng Nosler brass in mine and am liking it. It’s proved to be decent in consistency on its first loading but not what you’d be enjoying when sizing after your first firing. I have to expand the necks a touch to achieve the tension I want but other than that it’s ready for a firing. I’ll second the above post on the 215gr Hybrid. Very nice pill to be launching. Tolerant of a wider range of seating depth(in my experience) than the VLD for excellent accuracy. Mine just loves the Hybrids over 87gr H1000 & Fed 215M.

In my RUM I was shooting a 230gr Berger Hybrid Target with Retumbo and had excellent results velocity wise, H1000 wasn't doing it for me with the 230's (had a hard time getting 3000 out of it before hitting max pressure) but the lighter leads it was alright. I wanted speed with mine and I got it. I wont say my charge as it was HOT, but I was shooting sub MOA out to 800 with that and Fed 215M primers and hornady brass and an OAL of 3.875" (single shot only) Out of my factory 26" barrel I was averaging 3160 fps. My rifle was the Remington 700 Long Range with a Trigger Tech in it. Looking back I wish I would have bought good brass to begin with and threw all my Hornady junk out. Rifle is gone now due to the fact 90+gr of powder was getting pricy just to bang steel with. Loved the power though, wicked round.
