Before anyone makes the joke about "just buy a 30-06".. I do have one.. but I want to use the 300 rum as a "backup gun" or one to lend a budy when thiers is acting up.. one that has a lower recoil and won't mess up the deer too much at a close distance.

saying that.. I want to be able to recreate the powerlevel 1 loads for my 300 RUM.

does anyone have a good load to start with that is at the low end (and might be able to go lower).

Go with a 150g bullet and start at 86.5g imr 7828 this has the slowest mv in hodgdon's data. The lite bullet and slow mv should have less of a boot to the shoulder.
 
Its normally very hard to get great performance from a large capacity magnum when you download it. The 300RUM is designed to punch hard. Goodluck with your pursuit, and hopefully you find the load you want.
 
the thing is.. I don't need "great" performance.. what I need is something thats "ok" for deer sized targets are 100-150 yards max.. it's a "backup" gun/load that's rarely used..
 
reduced loads

I bought some 300 rum reduced loads from Remington,they are supposed to match 308 win . I bought them for $34 for the brass.They shot 1" groups at 100 yds and no kick.I pulled one to see how much powder was in them. It contained 50 grs. of a black short sperical powder. I too am searching for a reduced load for deer also,I have some 125gr. Noslers that I plan to play with some day. But for the price of the reduced loads I will try them out this hunting season,I don't think I can reload them that cheap.

I bought the same remington powerlevel 1 loads to try out.

I have lots of brass from purchased ammo over the years and figured id start loading them soon.

Wasn't sure if id have a good load by the time the season started so I'll see how they shoot soon..
