As is the Wby over the WM, over the 30-06, over the 308, over the 300 Savage. None of them will kill game any deader then the one it is supposedly "superior" to, but it does let you shoot a little further. And everyone likes a bigger #####. - dan
Chuck Hawkes lists the balistics as follows:
Cartridge (Wb + type) MV (fps) V @ 200 yds ME (ft lb) E @ 200 yds
.300 Wby. Mag. (180 Sp) 3240 2826 4195 3193
.300 Ultra Mag. (180 Sp) 3250 2834 4221 3201
He also list trajectory as:
Cartridge (Wb@MV) Bullet BC 100 yds. 200 yds. MRT@yds. MPBR (yds.)
.300 Wby. Mag. (180 Sp at 3250) .483 +2.4" +2.6" 3"@155 320
.300 Ultra Mag (180 Sp at 3250) .483 +2.4" +2.6" 3"@155 320
I never realized how close they were.
The reason for the WBY being so close to the RUM is simply because the WBY loads are loaded much hotter compared to the much milder Remington loads. If you compare handloads, with each cartridge loaded to it's potential, the RUM offers an additional 100fps to 125fps.
The barrel length would be the deciding factor for me...
if it is 24 inches make it a 300 Win Mag...
if it is 26 inches make it a 300 Win Mag...
If it is longer, cut it off and make a 300 Win Mag....![]()
What happens when they are both handloaded to thier potential, and fired from a 26" barrel? Either way you have to compare them from the same length barrel.
I like the Weatherby... better fitting, better looking rifles
The topic of the thread was a comparison of two cartridges not two different rifles. The two cartridges can be chambered many different rifles,or they can be chambered in the same make and model, and look and fit the same.
For Factory rifles, the RUM is only available in the 700 last I looked
Scanning through my 7th edition Hornady manual I see the 300Wby and 300RUM are within 100-200 fps maximum difference. The RUM burns more powder to get there making the Wby more efficient in my mind. I shoot and love my 300RUM but I wouldn't turn down a sweet deal on a 300Wby rifle.
One question came to mind while taking a good long look at the Hornady manual. If the 300Wby is already a pretty efficient round, why did Roy dream up the 30-378Wby? The 300RUM and 30-378Wby, for all intents and purposes are identical. Maybe the reason that all 3 of these "super 30's" are so close is the variety of powders we have now. Maybe when Roy come up with the 300Wby and the 30-378Wby the 30-378 was a real barn-burner given the powders of the day in comparison to the 300?
I've always loved the look of the Wby Mark V rifles better than the rest. My RUM days got going because of a great deal I couldn't pass up!
The 30-378 was developed at the request of the US Army, looking for a cartridge that would exceed 5000 fps for special purposes. With the correct powders it is as much faster then the RUM as the RUM is over the 300 Wby. FWIW - dan
When I was 16, I snaffled on to my dad's 300 win mag. I loved the take down power. My first rifle that I bought on my own was a 300 wby. Even more take down than the win mag... bordering on overkill. I can only imagine what the RUM would be like. Once you get much more than the Weatherby, you are into the realm of overpowered, in my opinion. That being said, there are people who think any 300 is overpowered.
My suggestion is to get whichever rifle you feel comfortable with chambered in either or. Personally, I would stick with the Weatherby.
