.300 RUM Potential?

Fun rifle that shoots great a bit over bore and a little hard on barrels but hey they make new barrels every day. Had one for a bit but found I preferred my 338 and 375 ultra over it. Probably also had to do to the fact that the other two are custom built and the 300 was just a Sendero.
 
My thoughts. I have had a sendero in 300 rum and would maybe get another rifle chambered in it one day but for all the potential they have I would have to suggest building a custom. For the reach that you can get with some of the bullets available I just don't think a factory rifle, barrel and chamber does it justice. I could shoot 180 partitions into real small holes but couldn't get the 210 Bergers to group very well at all and I like to shoot long range so that particular rifle went down the road.

You are in around 90 grains of powder I believe for 180 bullets. I don't imagine that the xcr's skinny barrel would do much better than mine did either.

Also when you get above the 180 grain I do think a brake is in order if you are going to shoot enough to get proficient with it.

It's a great cartridge but I think it has a special niche for long range shooting unless it makes you feel more comfortable cruising around in bear country.

I haven't come across any rifle manufacturer that sells an even remotely lightweight 300 RUM, not that most people would want one anyhow. Barrel length needs to be minimum 26" to achieve its potential. 375 H&H action length. All these contribute to a heavy gun. I just didn't find burning 30% more powder for a 10% velocity gain was worth it. YMMV.
