.300 RUM thoughts?

Measuring Contest Hmmmmmm usually what people say when they have very little to measure:) you gotta love it when people yammer on putting down people because they think they know everything!

Conclusion....if you want a 30 cal get what ever one feels good to YOU!

X2 on for this post + everything Dogleg said ... All these things thing factored in when I could have built any rifle I wanted in any caliber ... many nights looking at charts and data I realized that for the recoil and hitting power that was more than enough inside 1000 yards ... I bought a 27 inch hart barrel in 1-9 twist so I could launch a 180gr VLD in 7mm Rem Mag.

Talk about a pussy cat with a tonne of energy at 1000 yards. Is there harder hitting cartridges ... absolutely , But bang for the buck / recoil 7mm is for me

Even if you go 338 Lapua you have to go with a 30 inch barrel and a 1.925 twist " I believe it is" and you have AI the chamber and run a 300gr Scenar to put up the crazy numbers that the Lapua can produce.

Guys that buy these savages and Remington factory rifles are not going to get the numbers that those cartridges are capable of ... they are just trying to win a d*ick measuring contest. IMO

I personally think that unless you do the above things I mentioned to the Lapua or Rum there is not enough extra energy to justify running anything more than a 7 rem mag or a 300wm

Conclusion ... if you want a .30 cal stick with the 300wm

I was given the opportunity to shoot one of these a couple of weeks ago. The fellow has a custom 700 with a non-ported varmint weight barrel (Benchmark maybe) bedded in a McMillan stock, so its not a feather weight by any stretch. The cool part; the rifle was brand new, and the owner hadn't fired a single shot from it yet, so unless his gunsmith had test fired it, I fired the first round through it. Given the recoil generated by my .375 Ultra, I expected a pretty energetic sensation from lighting this thing up, but from prone, it seemed more like a .30/06 than it did a .300 magnum, and considerably less than a MK V Accumark in .30-378 if my memory is accurate. Huh, I couldn't decide if I was pleased or disappointed. It was factory ammo (this guy doesn't handload) but I didn't see the box, so I don't know what the bullet weight was, though I expect it was 180 gr. I think it would be a great long range rig, but did it leave me with the "I have to have one" desire? Not really. As long as I don't think about it too much. Of course if he decides its not for him and wants to sell it; well you know. Lets see, 210 gr Matrix VLDs over R-25 . . . .

It depends on what you "need".

If a 30 carbine will do for all your needs, then the 30/30 is overkill and "inefficient", even "ridiculous" to some people. If a 30/30 is enough, then you can say the same about the 308. And on we go with the 30/06, 300 Win Mag, 300 Wby, 300 RUM, etc.

I enjoyed my two customs in 300RUM. The 300RUM is an excellent long range rifle for 5-10% of shooters, but the rest, will never use anywhere near its potential, and can't handle the recoil. I had my rifles built with #5 barrels, to add weight to the muzzle, and with the McMillan stocks, and no brake, felt recoil was much more comfortable, than my Mark V in 300wby.

Boomer - shooting a 300 RUM compard to a 375 RUM is not camparable as you know after shooting that fellows 300 the other day - the 375 RUM and the 378 Weatherby are VILOENT recoiling cartridges in MHO ! I don't mine some heavy recoil but in a hunting weight rifle they are almost intolerable off the bench ! My Rem M700 375 H&H with 300 gr-ers is has MILD recoil compared to those 2 even in a 8.5 lb rifle ! LOL RJ

That lil .375 ultra tain't nothin, I can hold 5 prone with it, not with a hot loaded .416 Rigby though; with it I'm only good for 3, then I loose focus. Mind you shooting a .458 over the last couple of years has made me a bit less intimidated by jumpy guns. But ya know what, the idea wearing a T-shirt while shooting a Mosin Nagant carbine, with it's wicked curved butt plate, fills me with dread. Put that stock on a .300 Ultra, and you'd never have to prove your courage in any other way.

LMAO ! Cheers RJ

The 300 rum is a good cartridge its just very over bore. So you dont see much for gain with all that extra powder over the 300 wm. That's why the 338&375 RUM work better since the case isn't so restricted.

Boomer what weight of bullets are you using in your 375 and your 416?

I love mine, no belt, lots of room for powder, shoots high BC 308 cal bullets fast. My sendero has been amazingly accurate with any bullet and powder combo. Shot through a pine tree with a 200 gr LRX and killed a bear. Almost went right through a grader blade at 400 yards with a light load of Retumbo. I use braked rifles because I am recoil sensitive created by both ocular bones been broken. I wouldn't shoot one with out a brake..

noneck180 - That certainly is a nice rifle! I have to laugh at the idea of shooting through a pine tree to kill a bear on the other side though. I guess game animals will start having to learn the difference between cover and concealement with all the uber-magnums around! :)

Very Nice rifle noneck I really like that Bolt handle where abouts did you get it if you don't mind :)

It was a trade/ favor from a member here, not sure he takes on work, but will ask. I didn't mean to hit the tree. I only knew after we followed the blood trail back and one of my hunting partners noticed the bark was missing..maybe 2-3" sapling. Must have hit it square, barnes are tough. I have seen misses when hitting branches/twigs pretty small. Guess it has to do with deflection..I wouldn't believe it myself unless I saw it with my own eyes.

I had one in a number 1 that kicked viciously so I had a brake put on and blew out my ear drums with one shot while hunting so I sold it. A few years after that, I bought a new Rem 700 LSS that was fun to shoot. I found that rifle to be physically just too large to carry through the bush all day and most shots here are under 100 yards, so I sold that one, too. Great calibre though.

I've used the 300 rum on everything from deer to moose. Its a great long range round for all north American game. The last animal I took with mine was a mountain goat at 708 yards. I have found it to be very accurate. It performs the just like a 300 wby mag but goes a tad faster. If your looking for a 300 for long range hunting duties, I would choose a 300 wby or a 300 rum.

I've had a couple of 300wm and couldn't get attached to them. The arm worked better for me. When the 300RUM came out I thought that it was crazy overbore. I bought one anyway and still think that it is crazy overbore but I love it. I load with 200 gr accubonds and only use it when hunting in an area where long range shots may present themselves.

#1 son has been using his 700 SPS in 300 RUM for everything for years now and has made some amazing shots with it. I just watched him take a ram 1 shot at a ranged 521 mtrs. He loads his with 165 gn AB at a ridiculous velocity (a chip off the old block). His buddy had wounded this ram and solicited James' assisstance in finishing and recovering it. I went along, with my 257 Wby as backup, but the kid didn't need me, he "got 'er done".
