300 sav

Look at some cartridge case dimensions, and when the cartridges appeared, and you will be sure.;)

Ok, I am looking at the info? The 308win seems closer to the 300sav than the 30-06?

What am I missing?

I was always under the impression that the 308win was based off the 300sav with less slope on the shoulder and a longer neck to facilitate more dependable feeding in the fully auto firearms of the military?

The base of the .300 Savage is the same as the 30-06. The 30-06 came first

30-06 was cut down and necked up and down to form a myriad of cartridges. Maybe the idea for the 308 WInchester came for looking at the 300 Savage, but the case dimensions are that of a cut down 30-06

Hmm, could one not say the same about the 7mm Mauser and it pre-dates the 30-06 so then the 30-06 would have been based of the 7mm Mauser and therefore the 25-06rem, 270win, 280rem, 338-06 & 35 Whelen would all have been based on the 7mm Mauser?

I just checked the Wholesale catalog and they list both brass and ammo for both the 300 and the 250Savage, Whether there is stock or not is another thing or if they can find it .....

Yup!

The USA sure as hell looked at the 7x57 when thinking about the 30-06!

Still,t he 300 SAv was around 1920, long time after the 30-06.

All true, and the 8mm Mauser predates that. - dan

Right now, there is minimal brass in stock for things like 308, 270, and 30-06 let alone the rarer calibers. There are at least 8 that I have asked for that are not in. That is not just wholesale but every gun shop around alberta.

The first moose i ever killed (my first big game animal) fell to a .300 savage (M99) And as it happens the last bull moose I shot was also taken with a .300 savage. I like the Savage 99 and I like the .300 sav.

Oh! I like black and white check shirts and jackets as well, apparently.

Duffy - way to control the wolf population!

I love the .300 Savage...almost as much as the .250 Savage!

A hunter using a .300 Savage loaded with 130gr TSX would be sufficient for everything except grizzlies out to 300 yards or more. That covers the vast majority of hunting in Canada and it does this without burning much powder, light recoil and relatively mild report. I know you can load a .308 down to .300 Savage levels, but the old timer has way more charm!

Win 748 is all you need to know 42gr for 150gr bullet,41gr for 165 and 40gr for the 180 .All shot MOA or better in my 99 before i foolishly sold it.Still got a .250 in 99 and a 700 Classic never for sale...................................Harold

check out winchester super x for 300 savage they hav 4 different loads listed on their package for various types of game norm

The only thing I've shot with a .300 savage was a porcupine. If you're looking for a good porcupine load, 180grain core-loct is the way to go!!:sniper::D
