300 Savage Bullet for Elk?

I CAN"T stress enough the "make sure of where your bullet goes" part.

MAKE SURE OF YOUR SHOT. I have shot moose with a 150gn Sierra gameking at 260yds. But it was broadside and she went 75yds with no heart before piling up. Your round will work!!!
 
I've shot several head of big game with the 300 Savage, including moose.
I have always preferred 150 grain bullets in this case.
I do use the Partition myself, but at 300 Savage factory ballistics, practically any cup & core bullet will work just fine as long as you pick your shot.

Stick to cast bullets Ben, a TTSX or an Accubond will expand very well at those speeds as well. I have had wonderful expansion out of both out to 550yds on 100lb animals and the velocities would be less than what the 300 Savage would make at 300yds.
That being said, I believe a 150gr Speer or Hornady Interlock would be fine, and Federal blue box cup and core is very similar.
 
it doesn't really matter what bullet you use , 150 , 180 .... anything in between ...... ( assuming it stays in one piece and doesn't come apart on impact )

it also doesn't matter how far away the animal is ......

what does matter is shot placement , put the bullet through the lungs and it will go down .

so what a person needs to do is practice practice practice ....... with the exact same ammo you will take hunting .
 
I've used partions and accubonds 150grainers in my .300 Savage, had very good accuracy(accubonds were slightly better groupings). Both hammered deer and expanded well. The shots were under 100 yards though. This year I'm trying ballistic tips but that's because I have 2 boxes to load. I can't speak of how the "premium bullets work on Elk but I know they expand well on thin skinned game. 150 grainers that is

If it was me, with your choices, I would plan on hunting with the 150's and make damn sure I stayed away from the shoulder.

BUT, I would take a box of 180's with me and see if there was an opportunity to test fire atthe hunt. If there was, I would fire 3 shots and see how good the group was and how far away it was from where I aimed.

If the group was good and not too far, I would click in the required sight adjustment and tap the scope with a round to make sure the adjustment moved.

If your rifle has iron sights, I would just stick with the 150's.

I have a Savage in 300 but have only logged 150's in it, so don't know how much different a 180 would be.
