300 Savage Bullet For Model 99

Approximately 1700fps is the expansion threshold for most cup and core boattail .30 cal bullets, which most would load in a .300 Savage.

Let’s see, if a 150 grain Speer boattail leaves the muzzle at say a conservative 2500 fps, that would mean around 350-375 yards expansion would be insufficient.

Like wise a 180 grain Speer boattail doing a mediocre 2330 fps would drop out of the expansion window around the same 350-375 yard range.

165’s ghee whiz about the same……

For the good of everyone involved let’s just go shoot some critters and lay off the what if’s and if my aunt had testicles type scenario’s……

Some of the replies are a bit off topic, as bullet performance on game wasn't part of the question.

I do agree it's very relevant though, so no diss.

OP, it's very likely your rifle prefers flat base bullets, whether they're flat tip, spire point, or round nose isn't going to make any difference.

As for shots past 300 yds, or even 200 yds, IMHO it's a moot point.

First, i would try Varget or 4064 - it may make the bullets you have shoot better, or it may not. Try and see.
Failng that, 41'ish' grns (+/- 1 grain) of Var/4064 and a 150 flat base will prob get you what you are after. Interlocks worked for me.
