What bullets would you experienced .300 Savage guys recomend for whitetail, likely shooting within a hundred yards. Would like to stay close to 150gr.
I see Hornady has a SST 150 listed specificly for the .300 sav. Seem a little shorter than the regular 150 SST...perhaps for the short neck of the .300 Sav???
Or maybe Barnes TTSX?

Tks

The Hornady 150 grain SST bullet would be a fine choice in the old 300 Savage.......The shank of that particular bullet is about 1 caliber in length, which is more than enough for the short necked Savage cartridge.......With a muzzle velocity of somewhere between 2,700 and 2,800 fps, you don't have to worry about over-expansion at close range.....We've shot a good number of deer with this bullet in our 308's......dependable as taxes....

A friend of mine uses a 300 Savage and gets a white tail or two every year. He uses the cheapest, least expensive .308" 150gr soft points he can find. I don't think he's ever used bullets meant specifically for the 300 Sav and just uses bullets meant for the 308 Win. He has a bolt action though so it might have a longer magazine?

I've never used any of the Barnes solid copper bullets on game myself but have read many reports of them completely failing to expand when not going fast enough. The normal recommendation is to use a lighter bullet at a higher velocity or not to use them for anything past a certain range (goes from 50yds to 200yds depending on who you talk to) unless you are using a magnum-level cartridge.

I was going to comment on here, but you have basically said what I was going to post!
I would just add that cheap 180 grain bullets will also do just fine for deer. In other words, just any 150-180 grain bullets you happen to have, or can buy cheaply. Bullets only of you reload and any factory loadings if you are not a hand loader.

I have a Remington 700 "Classic" in 300 Savage.

It absolutely loves the 150 Partition...I can push it to above 2800 with Reloder 15 or Vihtavuori N540.

Just a sweet, low recoil, effective rifle/chambering for almost anything non-dangerous in NA.

Regards, Dave.
