Can't speak for the other poster, but my Remington 81 has peep sights which are far from on. So, I would expect to spend a couple boxes just zeroing them ... and then to gain any effectiveness over 50m, significant practice, when compared to a scoped rifle.

I'm not complaining at all, but iron sights require more practice than scopes, which equals more money spent.
 
My 99F in 300 with Williams peep sight is a great shooter with handloaded 165 gr Hornadys and RL15 or IMR4895. No problem to keep inside 1.5" at 100 yds. Loads are near or at max and no issues.
 
I like shooting it thats why I shoot it for. it reminds me why I like having a scope. at 110 grains i have fun and can plink at cans with open sights. I let me friends shoot it too so they have fun shooting the "Cowboy gun" I have my SKS that I have great fun with as a semi auto and a 3006 that im working back to my military long range shooting distances with. But for having fun and letting friends shoot its a nice safe gun for beginners and youths. . as to price of it well if im having fun I dont care what it costs and if i get a friend whos too upity ill drop a 168 amx into the rotary drum and let him find it:cool:
 
Mine is a 99E lightweight carbine with 20" barrel. Very first batch I loaded up to try was hornady 150 interlock flat base over varget ,cci 200 primers and hornady cases.I still can't believe how it shoots with 41.5 gr of varget. It always was an accurate rifle with fed blue box 150 but with hand loads, it's a tack driver.

The .300 savage tends to prefer flat base bullets for sure. My own favourite bullet for it is a 165 grain.

All 99's I've owned cut under 1" 3 shot groups at worst scoped ......usually 1/2" with the forend bedded the last inch and the forend screw tensioned just right...some just slip in a waxed/oiled thin cardboard shim if you don't wish alterations....Harold
