dont hear alot about this cartridge anymore, probably due to the fact there is no current factory rifles chambered for it to the best of my knowledge. Remington did make it the 'Classic' chambering in its 700 Classic a few years ago, that I know.

who uses the 300 savage or has any good 300 savage stories? whats your favorite load for your gun?

I regulary take one of my antlerless deer (and occasionally a buck) with a 99 in .300 savage--either a 99 F featherweight, a 99A series A in .300 or a 99R.

All of them will put three shots in less than an inch using imr 4895 0r 4064 powder and hornady interlock 150 or 165's or remington bulk bullets.

Not very exciting but reliable on deer.

.300

I have had a 99F in .300 for years and recently bought an EG model to try. Great little rifle/round for deer in mixed cover. I have an old Weaver 2.5 scope on it and my father or grandfather would have loved it if they were still alive.

I also used 150 grain Hornady bullets and IMR 4895. I may try H4895 as it is more temp stable.

I have observed a friend's .300 model 99 used on several moose with very good results using 180 grain factory loads but he never shoots past 200 yards and is a good shot. There might be a lesson there for all of us!

Regards,

I shot a 300 Savage Model 99 once, does that count?

I've got a real need for a 6lb all up Rem 700 Stainless w/4x Matte Leupold chambered in 250 Savage.... a better rifle for youngsters would be hard to find. Been craving a build for years.... may just happen yet.

I hunted with my .300 Savaage EG with a Bushnell 3200 elite to take a doe caribou, and my buddy used the same gun to take a second caribou. I couldn't ask for a nicer shooting rifle, and in each case, one shot at approximately 100 yards, was all that was needed. I don't reload, as of yet, so I used 180g Federal. It turns out my gun likes them quite well. Next year, I may try my .300F, or my .308R, or my ....:)

Are you sure it is an F Dan? I would be interested in seeing a pic--99F pre-war was a takedown model with a straight grip stock, schabble forend. Post war F didn't come out until 1955 and has a checkered pistol grip stock, round forend. In 1946 only (catalog) model was 99EG, 24" barrel, pistol grip stock, Schabble forend. There are a few non catalog pieces that a known to exist from that time period.

I have a 99 in 300 savage from the 1930's. It has the original lyman peep on it and has never even been drilled for sights. The .300 savage is a great round for deer and the odd moose at reasonable ranges. That 99 is my go to gun now in the thick stuff when fast handling is required. I have never reloaded but I have read many an article on how well of a performer the cartridge is when taken up to the pressures that can be handled by modern firearms. The problem with factory ammo is that it is under loaded by a large fraction as so many really old guns are chambered in it and there are liability issues. They play it safe rather than sorry. The bullet selection is now really poor in factory ammo with few companies running them off. Guess it's time to learn to reload because I love that gun.;)

I used a 300 Savage with a 2.5X Weaver to take a nice buck 2 years ago (7 point, 195 lbs). I was field hunting and shot from a 15' tree blind at about 225 yards using 180 gr. Winchester factory ammo (Power Points, I think). He stopped to smell a spot I had seen a doe about an hour earlier. He was trotting directly towards me with his head down when he stopped for a sniff. I hit him right between the shoulder blades breaking his spine.

In NB, we have to put our name in for antlerless deer. My buddies and I don't apply as we're only interested in bucks. So we have to make sure we ID the ### before pulling the trigger. My old Weaver scope was so dark that at 225 yards I couldn't see any horns. I had used my 10X binocs to ID then put the scope to him.

I've since sold the Savage / Weaver combo for $200. It was a nice little gun and was / still is in great shape. I had bought it for $200 back in '89 from a lady who was selling off her deceased husbands hunting stuff. The owner of the local guns shop used to sell these in years past. According to him, this particular gun was made in '60 or '61, IIRC.

Thought you fellows would like to see a picture of the caribou and the 1949 .300 savage 99EG. Animal doesn't look very big there but really is a nice doe.

I wildcatted a 30/30 T/C Contender carbine barrel to a cartridge called 308 Bellm which are 444 Marlin brass necked down with 308 Winchester dies and loaded to 300 Savage velocities 150gr bullets @ 2650fps from a 21" barrel.

It has performed perfectly on mule deer.

I have a Remington 760 in .300 Savage. This year will be my second year
using it for deer hunting.

Doesn't recoil as much as 308 Win but hits harder than 243.
(I only like short action calibres.)

I know for sure that Winchester and Federal make ammo for 300 Savage.

I have a '99 in .300 that was my g.grandfathers. He used it to take the buck that I have as my avatar (it's been passed down with the rifle), I used it to take my first buck (just a 2 point). One day hopefully I get to pass it down.

I recently purchased a 99 in .300 savage and will be taking it deer hunting in november. I will be shooting 180 gr. RN interlocks over IMR 4320, which my 99 really seems to like .

Not that I see much point to it, but in a modern and strong action the 300 Savage can be loaded up to performance levels knockin on the 308 Winchester's door.;) I haven't owned one yet but that will probably change some day. I fondled and passed on a nice Savage in a gun store a few years back. Came back a few days later to buy it and it was gone :runaway:

After 80 years or so this cartridge is getting popular with Cast bullet benchrest shooters, the 30Br. is most popular, the 308 is used alot but actually has too much case cap., as the loads used leave alot of empty space! Like the 45/70 and .45 colt...the good cartridges just keep coming around every few years!

I took a bit of an interest in 99 Savages a couple years ago. My first was a .300 EG, and since then have acquired another .300 F, a .308 F, an 1899 250/3000, and a 99c in .308 which has been redone as a .358W. None are really "collectors" as such, but they are fine guns which are simply not being made any more. Now I'm entertaining thoughts of a 99c .308 rebarrel to 7mm-08. Savage did make them in 7mm-08, but they're difficult to find. Sure do like that action, and the .300 gives up very little to the .308.

I know that a bullet from a 300 savage will go through the floor board of an F150 and take out the starter........don't ask. No it was not me.......was my truck:mad:
