300 Savage

I know that a bullet from a 300 savage will go through the floor board of an F150 and take out the starter........don't ask. No it was not me.......was my truck:mad:

Now there is a campfire story.

A guy that used to hunt wioth us, pulled off the phoney shot of the century with his 300 Savage in a classic 50's 99.
he got a standing shot at a nice ten point buck. It was nearing the end of legal light, and the deer took a step. He hit a five inch maple square in the center, and still collected the deer.
The Remington bronze point factory load I think it was a 180 grain went straight through the maple, left the bullet jacket stuck to the entrance wound, and he collected the core under the hide on the off side. The distance was 25 yards. He still carries the jacket and bullet with him when he hunts as his lucky piece.

I thought I had done everything imaginable to an F seriies, but never shot one. The thought has occurred to me though. Not so much as I have thought about shooting a GMC since I bought one of those POS though.

Always wanted to play with the .300 Savage ctg. I'm thinking the Rem 700 Classic would be the perfect platform for doing so. You just don't see to many of them for sale these days though in that ctg... :(

Got a plain jane 99E in .300 and I have shot numerous deer from 10 yards to 245 yards. 1 shot kills great fast handling gun good for the bush. I loaded 150 gr nosler partitions last year and shot a large doe 160lbs at 60 yards bullet made a complete pass through, she was running full tilt as my buddy had just shot at her standing still broadside with his slug gun a 20 yards and missed (ha Ha Ha ) she folded like a cheap lawnchair. good wound channel. this year I loaded some 150 gr accubonds and can't wait to try them out on a horny old buck!

question about IMR 4895. I use this and would like to know a little more about the temperature sensitivity? does the cold weather drastically change the Point of impact?

I always make sure to chat it up with a distant family member at the yearly reunion. He had carried his 99 for a few years and really liked it before he picked up a 6.5 Rem Mag.

The one story that sticks in my mind was when he was sheep hunting with his brother. They found a pair of Rams way up on a snowy slope. He told his brother he was going to try a shot, even though it was an insane distance away. He found a rest and aimed way over the ram's back then fired. He didn't even expect to see the bullet come anywhere close. His brother called the shot for him, saying it hit the slope, just above the ram! He was just getting ready to try another shot when the Ram fell over and slid most of the way down the slope towards them. The best they can figure was the bullet passed right through and then kicked up the snow behind the Ram. I deon't remember the range but it was way too far to shoot. You can call bull if you like, but he is going to bring the horns to the reunion next year so I can get picks. I have known him awhile now and he doesn't seem the kind to feed the crap stories. I hope to post the official story and pics when I get a chance.

I have two Sav.99s in .300 sav. and they both shoot well with Federal 150s and 180s. I habdloaded some flat based 165 grain pills and that is what i've been using lately.

I just happen to own one of those 700 Classics in 300 Savage. It is one of the most accurate factory rifles I have owned [and I have owned a few!!] It does chase the 308 for velocity with Reloder 15 or VV N540. and it puts deer and caribou down with authority. I shoot no bullet heavier than 165 grains in it, and I would not hesitate to smack a Moose or Elk with it inside of 300 yards. And no, it is not for sale!!:D Regards, Eagleye.

Are you sure it is an F Dan? I would be interested in seeing a pic--99F pre-war was a takedown model with a straight grip stock, schabble forend. Post war F didn't come out until 1955 and has a checkered pistol grip stock, round forend. In 1946 only (catalog) model was 99EG, 24" barrel, pistol grip stock, Schabble forend. There are a few non catalog pieces that a known to exist from that time period.

Nope I'm not sure, just going by what the old man told me. I'll dig it out of the safe and have a look at it again if I can find the time, and see what it exactly has written on it. Thanks. - dan
