300 Short Action Ultra Magnum

I need opinions on the 300 Short Action Ultra Magnum round. I'm looking at a possible trade for a Remington 700 BDL chambered in that caliber.

Is it as good or better then the .300 Winchester Magnum?

If you are looking to aggressively shoot paper, then 223 or 308 so you can use surplus....plus plenty of match components if you want to get serious. I would recommend you stay in that lane. The 300SUAM and 300 WSM where designed so you could have the performance of a long action magnum with a short action rifle......mostly to reduce weight while hunting....

The WSM cartridges seem to have caught on with the shooting public, while the SAUM line seems to be going the way of the dodo bird. I'm not even sure if Remington is still chambering any of their rifles for the SAUM line, but they are chambering some with WSMs.

I Disagree completeley. If you don't handload...BUY the 300 SAUM!

Heres why: The SAUM lost the popularity contest....not many rifles chambered in it.....factory ammo is CHEAP! (like $25/ box @ Basspro)...it's hard to reload for that cost. Buy a ####load, shoot her up, and save your brass (to sell on ebay later).

After you've used up all the factory ammo you can find, take the gun to your smith. Why? Because for next to nothing (epps charges 45 bucks I think) he can run a 300 WSM reamer into it and guess what? You have a 300 WSM. Now by this time (depending on how much factory ammo you bought initially)
hopefully the "novelty" factor of the WSM has deminished some, and the cost for factory ammo has come down. It's a total win-win.

Buy the SAUM!

well there aint no Bass Pro shops around here blowing out SAUM ammo, thats for sure

rechamber to WSM does make sense I guess

the real gun nut answer is to buy a reloading kit AND the 300 saum

Then definately go with a 308 Winchester, if you're into 30 cals
