300 Short Mag. or 30-06?

I voted for the .300 WSM.

I own and more or else exclusively hunt with a .30-06.

The .30-06 is a great cartridge, and has yet to ever fail me on big bull moose, fat bears, or big bucks. That being said, I would most likely get the .300 WSM just because it is a little flatter shooting and I'd rather have more take down power than not enough. I hate tracking things very far.

But in reality, as long as you can do your part, and you make the appropriate choice of ammo for what you'll be hunting, it doesnt really matter.

Some guys must do a lot of last minute hunting if finding .300 WSM ammo is a big deal. In over 20 years of hunting I've never forgot, lost or ran out of ammo where finding some in a general store in the boonies was required.

I actually like having rarer cartridges and hunt with a .260 Rem, 7 SAUM, .35 Whelen and .444 Marlin.

;)You and me both:). A few of mine in that rarer group;
  • 7x57R
  • 7x61S&H
  • 308NM
  • 358NM
  • 444 Marlin

Agreed, and besides, factory ammo is for pussies :D

Im actually selling my .338 Federal and am now debating on crawling back to the .30-06 on my hands and knees or sleeping with her younger, hotter cousin the .300 WSM

Paul, but you re not really having an hunting season too there ???!!!

:D

i know this one was easy .... all the best.

I know all abut our crappy hunting here. ;)

CT and Walmart can keep their ammo. I haven't bought factory ammo in almost 20yrs. Shooting a 223AI, 257Roberts, 358Win, 358NM and a 375CT pretty much precludes factory ammo anyways. :)

I do own a 30/06. Everyone should own one. It's THE perfect sporting round!

Those guys still stuck on "needs to have ammo readily available" must be the guys who don't have a hunting checklist, and don't bring along a backup gun. With that mindset, they probably zero their rifle once a decade with their box of CIL ammo with the $4.97 price sticker, whether they need to or not. Simple prep makes that factor irrelevant.

The young guys in our camp have more than once ran out of ammo, socks, forgot their boots... and shared ammo. We have the basic calibres in our camp; .30-06, .270, .303, and .30-30. The boy still bring in the deer though (smile).

I would not replace a good '06 with a 300wsm

With that said for an initial purchase why not go with the faster round? 300 short mag ammo is not in short supply by any means and the last time I looked at Canadian Tire there was a bigger selection of 300 wsm than there was of 30-06.

I think in time the 300 Short Mag will overtake the '06 as the most versatile 30 calibre cartridge on the market. :nest:

30-06. Not enough of a diffrence to matter anyways so the more common round wins. All purpose has to include ammo availability. S**t happens and sometimes ammo getting lost is beyond your control.

I own and shot way too much a 270 WSM and can tell you the problem with magnums:
the average shooter can only handle 30-06 (or 7 Rem Mag) level recoil in a 9lb rifle! (the M1 Garand rule)
This rule will stay in effect until the average Canadian hunter reaches 6'2" 195lbs ;)

Simply put, the average hunter can't handle a magnum.
Lots of training can allow any serious shooter to handle 300 WSM, 300 Win Mag or 338 Win Mag but it's asking too much from a weekend warrior.
He's much better served by a 30-06 and a slighlty lighter premium bullet.

i cant believe we have factory 358 NM ammo here.

but you have a very nice selection.

you re so true everybody of us need a 30-06 in a marlin XL7 or a stevens 200 ...

The 30 06 is a great choice I own a few of them .I also have a few 300 wsm mags .
I would go with the 300 wsm specially if you are a reloader you can have lots
of power and flatter shooting and more punch or you can down load to 30-06
and have everything you like in the 06 . But if you purchase the 06 that’s all
you will get . Your choice . My opinion .
