Go Weatherby, or go home ;)
Seriously though, the .338/378 out classes the .338 UM by a wide margin and same for the .30/378 on the .300 UM.

I have a 338 Ultra Mag Remington Sendero and it is an accurate and powerful rifle, a bit much for deer (fist sized holes in ribs on exit side at 240 yards) but it was great on moose. When Brutus from CGN was living here him and I had no problems keeping all our shots well inside a 8" shoot-n-see target at 500 yards off the bench at our range. I used 225 gr Hornady Interbonds and they worked great on the moose and 3 deer, the only bullet I recovered was found in the neck of the moose. From what I have read the 30-378 needs at least a 32" barrel to get the most out of the massive powder charge it uses.

BRASS $$$$$....RUM is much cheaper and delivers all the volocity and energy you'll ever need. Read up on the 338 EDGE. I've got both the 300 and 375 RUMS and love em! If it don't die after being hit well with a 375 pill (260g) @ 3000 FPS...I don't want to be around when its pissed off!!! Go with a 28" varmint contour barrel 1:10 ROT and you good to go. The Senadro's have built a solid reputation

Well I have had both caliber and currently have a 300 RUM personally I would stay away from Weatherby unless you like paying way more that what you need to. I have had many weatherby rifles nothing wrong with them. But when it comes to the cost of operation I sold my Weatherby based on the fact that for the money spent the performance gain was not enough for what I hunt.

And as for
Go Weatherby, or go home ;)

I went home with more money in my pocket :) Because I didn't sold my Weatherby

What are you hunting with those uber magnums?

Is it anything that a more sensible caliber such as a 300 win mag/300 WSM or a 338 win mag can't handle. Ammo will be much cheaper for both, more accessible and your shoulder will appreciate both more.

I dont have any of them but i do have a 7mm RUM and its deadly accuarate. The ammo is cheaper for the Ultra Mags then those for the weatherbys and so is brass for that matter.

"a more sensible magnum"???? Well okay.....why do the job only half way when complete overkill is just a trigger pull away? Obviously you've never owned an "Uber Magnum". 800 yards with practise...no problem with the RUMS...log onto utube buddy

The 30-378 wby adds 100fps to 150fps over the 300RUM in a 26" barrel using handloads.Brass for the RUM is easy to get and reasonably priced, whereas 30-378 brass is very expensive. The 300RUM can be chambered in most actions, but the 30-378 can't be chambered in some actions. The 30-378 produces noticeably more recoil, and barrel life is noticeably less as well.I personally built two 300RUM rifles and am very pleased with them.

the weatherbys have the "freebore" or longer throat which is one reason for the added velocity. The weatherbys also have that 1.5 moa gaurentee on their factory rifles. The ultra mags and lapua have no belt and you can seat your bullets out to touch or crowd the lands (depending on your magazine length and bullet). for the precision benchrest guys, crowding the lands, brass life, etc. are very important. On a custom built rifle, I could see the ultras and lapuas having an accuracy edge. For the big game hunter focused on downrange energy the weatherbys still have the edge.

Yep, just what everybody needs to make those 800 yard shots on deer and moose....:dancingbanana: If you like to take your hunting advice from utube all the power to ya....

You don't purchase a 300 RUM for 100 yard deer hunting pal! If your in the market for a RUM your application will likely be shooting game or target over 300 yards and well beyond...as skill and equipment permits. Never heard of LR hunting I guess eh?

Of the four I've only ownded the 338/378. I've owned and used 300 WMs and several 300 WBYs. In 30 caliber I feel these do all that can be done with this size bullet. I've used most 338 based rounds, the 338/378 is surely max here. It makes good use of the large capacity case. Pretty much the first combo. I put in it went very fast and averaged 3/4". This was good enough for hunting and I used that load to take to fairly nice Mulies. My hunting load used the 210 TSX but it also shot the 250s at over 3100 fps and shot them well. With the brake it was like a 300 mag.( pussy cat ) without it you could tell when it went off. Great round, more than you really need? Probably. I've replaced it with a 378.

22 years in the Army, yeah I have heard of it and seen long range shooting..... long range shooting can also easily be done with the 300 win mag.... I have seen it done consistantly...

If you think you can make your 800 yard shots on game that are no problem as you say, then good luck to ya....

We all can make 800 yard shots on the internet :sniper:

It's so true. During hunting season I love coming across guys who claim to have shot deer or elk at 700+ yards. I bet most of those same guys would have trouble hitting the broad side of a barn at 300 yards.

300 yards is honestly as far as I'd let myself shoot but I'm definately more comfortable around 200-250.

If I ever get a chance to get out on a nice NON windy day I'll get my 300 RUM burning! Bought the rifle on the EE, with a 10x 3200. Gotta figure out them mil-dots though.....

never seen much need for those million-fps uber-mags myself. I'd rather go BIG than fast; I don't intend to shoot anything at 800 yards. Plus, most rifles and loads for something like the 30-378 wouldn't be capable of accurately shooting that far anyway. Just cause the cartridge can do it doesn't mean the rifle can. Likewise for the shooter
