300 Win Mag. Accuracy

I'd like to load 300 Win. Mag for accuracy, not hunting. My initial thoughts are big Sierra MK's (175g - 220g) ?? and slow powder (H1000) ?? figguring on getting the high BC working for me.

On the other hand, The rifle is only a Winchester 70, not a heavy barreled tack driving pretender. No reason to expect sub MOA performance but ya never know till you try.

I'm looking for guidance from anyone with practical experience getting small groups out of their 300WM so I can get off on good footing with a bullet/powder combo.

Oh, I've been following another thread discussion regarding brass issues so I've already got the big picture on that.

Load for 300WM

It may not work for your rifle but the two loads that I use in my Rem 700 XCR (300 WM) use IMR 4831 and 168 gr and 180 gr SMKs.

For the 168 gr SMK I use 70.9 gr of IMR 4831 and on the Chrony have gotten some very consistent velocities and nice groups out to 300 m.

For the 180 gr SMK I use 71.6 gr of IMR 4831. For this round the velocities on the Chrony are not as consistent as the 168 gr SMK but still get sub MOA groups at 300 m.

What distance do you plan to shoot. For shorter distances better accuracy is usually obtained with lighter flat base bullets. At longer distances the high BC bullets do better with less wind drift.

Try 79-80 grains of H1000 under a 190 SMK or 190 VLD, seated to the lands. I got that one from Walt Berger, the groups hang together around 1/2 MOA vertical for 1/2 mile or so. Never tried it past that yet.

I belong to a range about an hour from here in Hampton NB where I can shoot to 450 yds. I'd nonetheless like to develop a long distance round, if I can, simply as a personal project. I'm not a match shooter, just a tinkerer .

Buddy of mine uses 155 gr bullet when target shooting 300 WM. One the downside, such light a bullet with so much powder behind it can be a barrel burner.

450 yards is long distance ... !

Many long range shooters don't max out on the powder but you seems to need more practise than just copy of a recipe - Biggs

No argument regarding practice. Thanx for the advice.

Regarding ammo, some things are difficult to practice without it. Thought I'd get some advice on that too,, got any ?

My older Winchester 70 likes Reloader 22 powder and 190 Berger VLD. Loaded just off the lands. Only 1 round will fit in the mag at that length, the nose of the bullet sits on the feed ramp.

Don't under estimate your gun. My stock 70 will shoot easily under 1/2 inch with this load.

Excellent !! Rem 700 shooters give that rifle high marks for accuracy and I figured the M70 would be as good. Its encouraging to hear your 70 is dumping em in there. Thats what I'd like to be able to do with mine.

I've noticed that RE-22 under SMK in both 190g and 200g resulted in reported "Accuracy Loads" in my Sierra manual too. Your experience and Dogleg's suggestion earlier, seem to support the idea of using a 190g bullet. "Think I've found my projectile", great!!

BTW guys, I know matches go to 1000 yds and 450 isn't considered LD. The 450 yd range is what I've got,, nearby enough to work with. This ain't the prairies .

There is a 850 yd range near Halifax I can try later if things go well and I get brave, but for now trying for sub MOA groups out to 450 will keep me entertained I'm sure.
