Hi, I'm planning on starting my first long range build in the near future. What barrel would you recommend for a 300 win mag on a 700 action? Will be used to try and get out to a mile.

How about a 28" Krieger, chambered in 300 PRC with an 8" twist. More modern cartridge and better to reload (head-spacing off the shoulder rather than the belt - IMHO, of course).

I have a Kreiger light Palma on my .260. Excellent barrel.
There are also excellent Canadian made barrels. JC Custom, IBI, et al.
I would be inclined to go with a light or medium Palma contour, finished at 30", with a good brake. If you are going to be loading heavy VLDs, a faster twist might be a good idea.

There might be better choices than .300WinMag, but if that is what you want, go for it.

Do you have a place to shoot long range, out to 1500m?

I would ask why a 300 WM with other, potentially better options that are out.

For a barrel, a lot of that will be how long you're willing to wait for the barrel itself, and then time for a smith to spin it up. Unless you go with a prefit style.

Length wise, especially for out to a mile, 26" would be as short as I would go.

Unless you're already invested in .300WM (ie you have brass and dies) you'd be better served building a .300PRC. Ballistically just about the same thing, maybe even a bit more performance but no belt, better suited to running long heavy for caliber bullets and still mag feeding and also lots of available factory precision ammo (if you want to shoot factory ammo).

As far as barrels go I'd go 26-29"for length and unless you need to keep it light I'd go for a heavy contour like an M24/M40, MTU, heavy varmint. I have a Krieger on my .300NM and it's an absolute hammer but have been having great results with IBI of late.

In the meantime I also think 300PRC might be the better choice. My 300wm hunting rifle is supersonic to 1550m using 208gr ELDM with a 24" Proof carbon barrel. A 28-30" barrel would be much better, maybe with 9 twist? 225ELDM or heavier should be much better for distance which I have not tried yet. 300wm shouldn't have any issues getting to a mile.

i am running a 26in krieger with 1-10 twist and shoot up to around the berger 215 but most of the time i like the berger 210gr long range match!
for barrel contour i am using the number 18 light varmint!

Nothing wrong or detrimental using 300WM case, belt doesn't cause any issues I'm aware of.
You get a custom barrel made, you can have it throated for whatever long profile bullet you want to shoot, and whatever twist you want.
300PRC factory offerings have the throat and twist already to go for long heavy for cal bullets, but you can make the 300WM do the same work, and probably better going custom.
