Hey Fellas just thought i would ask you gentlemen/ladies what bullets you would recommend for deer hunting with the 300 win mag, It is the first time i will get to use this gun ,as i just bought it a few months ago, for deer hunting. What brand and what weight. Thanks in advance

Vince

.300 for deer

I'd recommend what ever 165 gr. bullet groups best in your rifle ie:Speer g/s or mag-tip or Sierra Game king. Save Nosler Partitions for Moose/Elk. A hot 165 gr. in your .300 will shoot a bit flatter than 180's. I've hunted the Assinnaboin? river valley several times. Hunting around those fields out there can call for some real long shots.

Had a 300 Win Mag but traded for 300 WSM. Anyway, used 180 grn Grand Slam in my 300 Win Mag and shot both mule deer and moose with it. Both dropped equally quick - deer quicker really! I think a 165/168 grn TSX out of a 300 would be deadly on anything you care to use it on. :sniper:

Hornady makes a 190BTSP IL that would be deadly out of any .30cal other than the SKS...

I am loading my .300H&H with 200gr Accubonds at a pedestrian 2700 fps MV. Absolutely pancaked my buck last November.

If you're going to use any .300 mag, IMHO you need to use at least a 180gr bullet.

I'm going to be working up a .300 Win load for long range deer myself. I just bought a box of 180-grain Accubonds (the 200s just weren't sufficiently accurate in my rifle, but 180-grain Hornadys were superb, leading me to believe that my rifle doesn't like the heavier bullets).

The truth is that even the plain old 180-grain Hornady flatbase (which, as mentioned above, shoots beautifully in my rifle) will do the job on deer at any sane range (like inside 500 yards). A premium like the Interbond or Accubond is probably not needed on deer, but I like the plastic tip because it guarantees expansion, and the fact that these bullets are bonded gives a little more comfort when impact velocities get higher (as they do in the .300 Winchester Magnum at close range).

Either the 168 or 180-grain Barnes Tripleshock would also be truly outstanding, and would work on any big game animal in North America at any sane range.

Deer are easy to kill, if you are just hunting them any bullet will do. I use my 300 whenever I'm hunting deer and something else and I will be taking it to africa in 17 days for plains game. I shoot 168 TSX bullets at everything.

Agreed, I've killed way too many with a muzzleloader to believe otherwise. Still, the .300 mag is a great cartridge for those that can handle it.
The thing is you don't have to handle it. Get a nice "Deer gun". Say in 6.5x55, 7x57, 30/30 etc. Much more fun to shoot at the range and a lot easier on your shoulder.

Never fails

Vince was asking about what brand and what weight of bullets to buy for a rifle that he already owns, not what you think is a good "deer gun".

My post was a responce to "Dogleg's" post. Sorry it offended you. :bsFlag:

No offense taken.

I would like to hear more about what people are using for 300WM bullet selection, so can this thread carry on? Or are we going to here more about what "you" think is a good deer rifle?
