i am considering buying a rifle in 300 win mag and am considering using it for wolfs is it more then i need or just enought i know it's not to little ;) obviously it's more powerfull then a 30-06 and people use things liek 270

Its too big only if you plan on selling the hides through a trapper. Big holes = low $$ on auction.

And it might be a little expensive to shoot all the time if you go hunting often

Other than that, hell no! shoot away.:)

Yes you may be packing extra heat, but when you are out moose hunting and your packing your 300WM and you see wolves, let her buck! I've got some 150gr Accubonds to reload for my 300WM for this reason if I go out with the 300 for wolves this winter at long range. Also have a load to make with 110gr VMAXs for my 270WSM and 55 & 95 BST and 65 Moly VMAXs for my 243. My 243 will be my main predator rifle.

If you also hunt moose, elk, deer and bear then yes it would be a good choice but if you only hunt wolves then it would be way to much gun..

300wsm

hey there, i shot a wolf at about 60 yrds browning abolt 300wsm 200 grain nosler partitions, two holes, entrance .30 inch and exit .50, dropped the wolf like a tonne of bricks, i was moose hunting and happened to see her

What kind of action is the rifle? And how are you planning on hunting wolves?

A bolt action .300 mag. is a great rig for making one well placed powerful hit on a big animal at long range. If you hapened to call in a couple of wolves in close you might get one with it.

I called in two from a pack one day and used my sav,99 in .300 sav. to get both of them. I hit the farthest one, then dumped the closer one on her nose at 40 yards. Then I had to get back on the first one and shoot 4 more times rapidly to wittle him down.

If I had been packing a heavy recoiling bolt gun I doubt i'd have got two wolves.

I shot my wolf with a .300WM, 180gr Ballistic Tip over RL22. The shot was ~75 yards and placed behind the shoulders. Pelt damage was minimal and the wolf died quickly.

so will this totaly ruin the pelt i would like to have something to mount? i like the 300 win mag for it's power decent range of bullets for it also because i'ves seen demos of it shooting clear thropugh a kevlar helmet throug the head of the balistic dummie and throught the other side
(in cause we are ever invaded by armoured deer so that i will have suffient fire power to fight them off The Evil PETA is working on the deer avenger program to kill us all as we speak man:runaway: :runaway: :runaway: :runaway: )

Why limit yourself to one rifle??

One is good but more is better...:D

BobbyJack has your answer. There are many different factory loads in different bullet types and weights all for the same cartridge. Some are intended for varmints, some for big game and some for target shooting. If you get into handloading you will have even more choices for loads. Its all a matter of selecting the correct bullet/load for what you intend to hunt.
