Ok so I took out an old Ross that was rechambered to 300 Win Mag.

First time I took out the rifle I had found an old box of Winchester Silvertip 220gr and when I tested the rifle with it, I shot about 1.5" at 100 yards using a cheap 3-9 scope off my .22LR.

Today I mounted one of my Vortex Diamondback HD scopes onto the rifle because I wanted to take it out after moose. I picked up couple boxes of 180gr Federal Blue box to sight it in.

I started shooting and couldn't group better than about 5" at 100 yards. Figuring it was me I let someone else try to the same effect.

I had some of that old Winchester Silvertip 220 left so I decided to give the gun a few more tries with that. Low and behold, I grouped 1" with 6 rounds. Went back the federals and back to a 5" group.

So I've got it narrowed down to bullet weight and/or brand. Either the gun likes heavy bullets or hates federals.

Now I'm out of the 220gr and no one seems to make a factory 220gr anymore which sucks, it seems like 200gr is the highest made now. I do not have a set up for reloading, nor the space to do it so thus I'm currently stuck to factory ammo.

So does anyone make a factory 220gr round?

I guess the next step is try and find a box of 200gr and see how that prints.

I have a Sako 75 in 30.06 that is incredibly fussy on ammo. I was so close to selling it that I actually stopped shooting it for a couple of months After about 9 different types of ammo, I found it loved Winchester Silvertips in 150 and 168 grain weights. It hated Federal Blue and Winchester Super X.

I used the Silvertips as a basis to reload, and I now have about 4 combinations which give about 1 MOA accuracy on a good day. Fine for its intended purpose of hunting.

Not cheap, but buy a box of something different every time you go to a gun ship / CanTire / Walmart etc.

Candocad.
