I just purchased some H4831 powder,180GR Nosler (Green tip, boat tail)and I have federal large mag rifle primers. What would be a good load using this stuff? Will the mag primers be a problem? The reason why I purchased mag primers is because I had a recipe for a sierra 200Gr but could not find none. Thanks

I shot a lot of 180gr Nosler Ballistic tips and took many deer with them in my 300 Win. I used H1000 with them and CCI250 primers. H4831 is what I use now with 180 Hornady SST in my 300, but your combo should work well. Start around 70grs and work up in .5 grain at a time. I have not gone past 74grs but some books show 76 as a max.

H4831 and the 180 is THE classic combo for the .300 Winchester Magnum. There is one thing you should be aware of, however.

Older lots of powder (i.e., powder from about 6 years ago and before) were slower than the current lots. The classic load with older powder that works in almost any rifle is 76 grains of H4831 with a 180-grain bullet.

Hodgdon now lists 73 grains as Max for the newer lots of powder, and that is a true maximum. The newer lots are much closer in burning speed to IMR 4831 and, not coincidentally, 73 grains is perfect with IMR 4831 and a 180-grain bullet.

So if you're using a newer batch of H4831, stick to 73 grains or less with that bullet.

Good luck.

Hornady just came out with a new 208gr A-Max, can't to try'em out but still haven't found any data on it even though I just the new Hornady Loading manual.
