300 win mag loads

Just picked up a model 70 clasic in 300 win mag was wonder what people are use for loads powder, primers, and bullets, was thiniking in the 180 to 200 grain bullets.let me know what works best for you.

Bit of a "how long is a piece of string?" question.... You'll need to give a bit more info before you'll start to get good and useful answers.

What would you like to use this rifle for? Hunting big game? (in which case you might want to use a medium or high end hunting bullet). Target shooting at medium to long range? (in which case you might want to use one of the heavy .30 caliber match bullets). Casual fun shooting? (perhaps you might want to use a cheaper bullet for cost savings, or a lighter bullet for lower recoil more comfortable shooting)

Try the 180 grain bullets with somewhare between 72 and 75 grains of IMR 4831 [start low, please]
200's have worked well, using 74/75 grains of IMR 7828

I'm away from my data (at sea) at the moment but I started working up a load for my 70 using 73 +- ??gr of R22 under a 185 gr Lapua scenar. I'm under 1/2 moa right from the start. I also don't have my COL handy but I'm only a couple of thou off the lands.

Maybe 1/2 moa will be as good as it gets but I'm happy. Give Peter Dobson at Hirsch Precision a call, he'll fix you up with the bullets.

I don't use my .300 unless I need at least a 200gr. bullet as well. The Nosler Partition works, and it appears I may be moving to the Barnes TSX 200 grain as it shoots very well too, but I have yet to use it on enough game to know what I think.

So a good 200 grain bullet and H1000 to drive it (you must work up your own loads from the manuals, so I will not list the charge wt.) works best in mine.

My .300 likes RL 17 pushing 180's, set off with a CCI #250 primer.

For hunting, 180 Grain Sierras over 70-72 grains of IMR4350 with CCI Magnum primers has been a standby for me for over 20 years. I load 72 grains in my Sako but recommend 70 grains to ensure pressure is not a problem in the individual firearm.

I use 180 grain Barnes TSX over 70 grains of RL22, or another accurate load in my M70 is 76 grains of H1000 under a 180 Nosler Ballistic tip. Both with CCI LR magnum primers.

Start low as these are moderate to max loads.

I too was set on the 180 grain for my 300 WM. I did look into the 168 TTSX and wow, I was amazed with the accuracy.

I know you want to use the 180 gr., but you should also look at the 168 TTSX. I truly believe the 168 was made for the 300 magnums.

With 180 grain hunting loads you'll likely get quick success with RL22. I like H1000 and 190 SMK & Bergers for 1/2 mile targets and the same powder for 200 grain Accubonds for long range hunting.

I haven't used the 168 TTSX yet, but have killed a pile of game with the 168 grain TSX and IMR 4831. The load data was taken off the Barnes site, the charges are a bit lower than you would expect with conventional bullets. If I ever recover one I'll think about heavier, but in the meantime they shoot through moose and muskox lengthwise.

The .300 usually seems to shoot best with maximum loads. Most of mine are put up in Norma brass which can stand a little hotrodding. 215 and 215M primers mostly.
