I happen to prefer Winchesters over Remingtons so I am a little biased in my response. The Winchester was made in a few versions which vintage is it?

Welcome to CGN. The .300 WM is a very good caliber, but, depending on your experience and location, it may not be a better choice than a .308 or .30-06.

I'll third the recommendation for Rembo. I've owned three of his ex's, all great shooters exactly as dexcribed. He is very good a doing trigger work.

ask yourself!a)what are you planning to go after. b)am i comfortable shootin it? c)can you hit what your shooting at?with it. d)where are you planning to do most of your shooting?open plains?bushland? e)how many times do you want to shoot it in a row?300 win. tends to kick!
long story short shoot it first if you can .a rifle that you flinch when you shoot is no good to you .

Gun is a Model 70 XTR Sporter mag....in .300 win mag
I've got a model 70 XTR in .270 and I absolutely love it. The thing is that the XTR is not held in very high regard compared to older 70's (or even newer ones) but I just don't get that. I think it's a very nice rifle.
Now, as for a 300WM... I think this calibre is best suited for bigger game at longer ranges.

I've owned several 300 wins. and still have a cpl. I always have one of them with me on any hunting trip.(either as my primary or backup) It is a fine cartridge and the M70 is a great rifle.
If Rick has a 300 for sale you can't go wrong. Now if he would just get off his butt and finnish chambering my 280 Ackley.....
