300 Win Mag Ok For Deer??

Deer size game tend to explode when impacted by a bullet fired from a mighty magnum. So much so that other animals in the immediate vacinity may be wounded or killed by bone schrapnel. True! I read it once on the internet.

I've probably killed 25 deer with a 300 mag of one variety or another. Most of them with a 168 gr barnes TSX. Works very well, although it is overkill.

It's more than needed, but will certainly do the job. Like the other guys have said, use good, controlled expansion bullets and it will work fine. I would probably use TSX bullets like martinbns said.

As with any caliber, don't hit the deer where you plan to harvest meat from. If you hit it in the ribs lung area, nothing valuable is wasted anyhow. If you hit it in the ass with a 300 Win mag, or any decent centrefire rifle, you've ruined a lot of meat.

I traded off a perfectly good Eastern woods rifle (Remington gas auto in 30-06) for a bolt action .300 Win Mag after my first hunting season on the Prairies. Laser beam flat trajectory out to about as far as I'm comfortable shooting. That rifle with 150 or 165gr Partitions or Ballistic Tips bullets has done its job when I've done mine. Hold behind the front legs and one shot in the ribcage will suffice. I wouldn't call that overkill.

BarnesX bullets did not work when I hunted antelope. I should have used a bullet designed for more expansion.

If you want other proof, a hunting buddy got into the bottom of the Boone and Crockett Mule Deer buck with a very standard Savage "package" gun in .300 Win Mag.

in 300 mags i like 180 grn bonded for deer to moose. scirrocos or acubonds open quickly on deer and still hang together on bear or moose

i use a .338 win for deer sometimes, but i load it down a bit , 2500 fps with 210, or 225 partitions, same deal, be careful where you put it, i have had them come out threw the offside shoulder, good bye shoulder, very large holes with full power loads ,, wade

I've shot deer with both a 300 win mag, and my 338 win mag, and both are overkill, but at the end of the day, Overkill is just an opinion.
both were rifles I was absolutely confident in, and my ability to hit a target.
My confidence in the rifle far outweighs its relative overkill factor. I dont hunt with underkill guns :)

Yep...what he said :D

when moose hunting with my 300WM I use 200grn Nosler accubonds. If some poor little bambie deer happend to be standing there I'm going to fill another tag.

now if I'm only hunting deer I'll take my 25-06
