I own both of these calibers in a Remington 700 and Weatherby Vanguard repectively, both in gray laminate and stainless steel barrels. You may ask why I found it necessary to aquire both of these in the first place. I was told the Wby is 300 fps faster than the Win, that was my reasoning(who am I kidding, I just wanted another rifle) and that fact that it looks super sweet. I thought I would ask and get the collective thoughts on the two. I guess it really does not matter at this point since I own them now, but I am just curious. I have not noticed any personal difference other than the Wby having a nicer crisper trigger pull. They both hit hard and are equally accurate, Wby producing 1/4 inch tighter group at 200 yards. The Weatherby may look a little prettier. Enough banter, what do you think of the calibers?

If a Weatherby shoots great out of the box then your set. Unfortunately it's near impossible to seat bullets anywhere near the lands with a standard Weatherby chambering, and still have the ammunition fit in the magazine.

I have 3 different 300 mags, all in Remington 700's. 300 Wby, 300win and 300WSM. They've all shot OK for hunting, but when trying to develop sub MOA accuracy, the 300 Winchester has given the least grief.

I would go with the 300 win if you don't reload, easy to find ammo for the win, if you do reload i would go with the weatherby

I've owned both, but the only one I still have is the Winchester.

The weatherby is 300 fps faster than the winchester? My pet load for for the .300 Win Mag is H1000 under a 220gr Partition. I get 2858 fps out of a 24inch tube.

The weatherby can get higher velocities, but they usually have a 26" barrel, which can in itself be worth 35 - 50 fps.

In the end the difference is meaningless, the Wby brass is more expensive and harder to get, as is ammo. The wby also kicks more.

I shoot both for hunting rifles, I doubt the effectiveness is better from one to the other one Game size animals from deer to moose. I like the 300 wby over my 300 WSM and my 300 WM, but it has little to do with the cartridge, I just like that particular 700 rem action.

However in all practicality the 300 WM seems more practical if buying ammo $$ and or brass..

Both are easy to reload both deliver good accuracy, both have the mustard to do what needs to be done if needed.

Regards

Just one more quck comment,

I have never been able to push the 300 wby velocities that quicker (150-200 fps) MAX!!!, quicker than the 300 WM.
Wby has alway streached the velocities on all their Big magnums, specialy the 378 (30s, and 38s) family.

$100 a box!!! Yikes. Glad I chose 300WM. There's safety in numbers and I felt the 300WM would be the most widely available ammunition and probably offer the most factory options. Though I'm sure the Weatherby is a finer looking gun than my Savage.

I have had three 300 magnums . 300 H&H(300WSM = same vel) , 300 Win. Mag. & 300 WBY . My buddy has a 308 Norma Mag. Animals will not know the difference when you hit them . Plain and simple . My H&H is getting a new barrel in 300 WBY . Hornady makes 180 gr. Interlocks for it at the same price as the 300WM. Pick the one that feels right to you !

I doubt the critter you are shooting will notice the extra 300 feet per second from the Weatherby, nor the extra $$$ you forked out for ammo that you prob' had to drive all over the place to find in the first place.

I'd stick with the 300 win mag...in a pinch I can find it for sale at most Cambodian Tires in our area.

Yes but remember I bought it because it was hella cool looking, the 300 fps was just an excuse! I bought the ammo with the rifle(Princeton), and we have more than five boxes of it on hand in the store I work at all the time cause no one can afford it!

The weatherby's just ###ier. Full length magnum, 'radiused' shoulder, not something that every other hick at the range has

Virtually equal in performance, the 300Winchester is slightly more practical, due to ease of factory ammo and brass. Other than that, I would be happy with either.

I find the velocity differences between the various 300 magnum's insignificant. Once you jump up from the 30-06 you have become a real man and which one you use doesn't matter, I shoot a 300 win mag.

Nice, good point.:) I've had several of each. I like the WBY better as it is faster. Nowhere near 300 fps faster though. As far as WBY inflateing their factory speeds, probably but not the 378. I've loaded 270s pst 3100 with no ejector marks, normal bolt opening and normal primers. My last load was right at 3000 and was very mild. With the 300s its no real trick to go past 3000 fps. When you've got over 120 grs. capacity it should go fast.
