A buddy wants me to teach him how to reload. He has a Tikka T3 with bullbarrel chambered in .300 win mag. I told him he could use my equipment but that he should buy the components that he wants to use. He said he wants
What powder, primers, and projectiles should he use? He'll be target shooting only.
Lets here it folks what should I tell him to get?

Don't load it myself. However, I knew a guy who shot a heavily customised .300 Mag(17.5 lb rifle) in DCRA 1,000 yard shooting. He used 190 grain match bullets. Sierra Matchkings would do nicely. Won't be cheap though. No idea what powder, etc.
 
Sorry my spellin and grammerin ain't up to yourse highness of expectativeness!!!! If you ever saw me type you would laugh at that too! But then again you get what you get when dealing with a dyslexic.
But thank-you for a partial answer. I now have one opinion of one of the components...

Lots of choices really, 210 Berger VLD's, 210 or 220 SMK's, 208 AMAX's

H-1000, retumbo, RL22 for powder. Can't go wrong with any of them IMO
 
A heavy charge of IMR 4831 or IMR7828 will work well for you. I also got excellent accuracy with the 190 grain Hornady. The Nosler ballistic tips also performed excellent for long range paper punching.
 
The Sierra Accuracy load is 70.4 grains of Re22 and the 190 grain MKHP. I have also used this load and 72.4 with the Hornady 190 grain BT in a 700 Sendero. My Sierra bullets are molyed, and testing by alternating moly and non-moly bullets showed both printing to the same point. Whether it makes much difference was not proof in my limited tests firing three of each at 300 yards.
 
Any match bullet above 180 grains would be a good start. Though I've never used them, I hear that these days Berger match bullets are as good as it gets.

Any powder slower than IMR 4350 would also be a good start.

The classic 1000-yard Wimbledon Cup winning load for decades was something like 69 grains IMR 4350 pushing a 190 Sierra.

Other classics are IMR 4831, H4831, Reloder 22, Vihtavuori N560, H1000.

If your friend wants to stick with Finnish components for his Finnish rifle, he could try a 185 Lapua Scenar with Vihtavuori N560 out of a Lapua case. That combo would be a bit pricey, but it would be a Rolls Royce option that would be hard to beat.
 
Lapua doesn't make brass for the 300Win any more. :(

I've had good luck with RL-22, H-4831, and H-1000.
All the bullets seem to shoot in my guns, but for pure accuracy I'd give a slight nod to the 190SMK.

IMR4831 is a bit faster than H4831SC that's why they have little less amount of powder but it would start showing the signs of over pressure if you try to maxed out the case capacity , on the other hand drop down to 10% of ALL the loads given by any armchair expert and ( Little cramp and Magnum Win Primers )

Another vote for IMR4831 as a powder for heavier bullets. I've tried just about every other suitable powder over the years and keep drifting back to 4831. Easy to make accurate loads with.
 
208 a max, 215M primers, winchester brass, and use a Hodgdon Extreme powder, Retumbo or H1000. RL22 works well if you can't find the others.
 
208 AMax is a very accurate bullet as well and, apparently, less finnicky than the Berger.

RL22 si a good choice, as is IMR and H 4831, IMR7828 and RL25.
 
I shoot 72 grains of Hodgdon 4831, 190gr matchkings, CCI large rifle magnum primers, Lapua Brass. Muzzle velocity of 2900 ish
 
Thanks for all the great info guys! I gave him all the info provided and told him to read it. He knows shooting, just not reloading. One day soon he'll go shopping and then we can start with the tutorial.
