So I'm new to the reloading world and my brother and I are using an old recipe from my dad 70gr 4831 powder with 180gr Sierra btsp. My gun is Winchester model 70 and my brothers is a ruger m77. What else are you guys using and is anyone using the same stuff we are? I will post results once we get to the range and test. Thanks!!

There are a lot more knowledgeable guys on here than me but since no one else chimed in I'll tell you the little bit I know.
180 is a great bullet weight for the 300 because its a nice middle of the road that any twist rate should shoot. If your brothers ruger is like mine it has a 1 in 10 twist and could handle heavier bullets up to 220. I like Sierra game kings (soft point boat tail). Mine won't shoot corelokts at all.
I use Hodgden H1000 for anything 180 grain or up. I've heard IMR 7828 is also a great powder but have no experience with it.
The Hodgden reloading center web site is a great resource for Hodgden, IMR, or Winchester powder load data.

Don't just throw together a load that worked in another rifle, it could be dangerous in the next one.

Yes, go ahead and use those components but please do proper load work up.

Start low and work your way up.

You never know those rifles may not even like that combination, but they may.

TOO many variables between rifles.

Best way to work up a HUNTING load for me is.

1 - Find a powder you buy reliably.

2 - Find a bullet you can buy reliably.

3 - Find primers you can buy reliably.

4 - Get load data on the bullet and start from min and load up 5 in 1/2 grain increments. You should get around 30 - 40 rounds and head to the range.

You will see your groups open up and then close in and then open up again.

Don't chase max velocity. Law of deminishing returns on that one. If you can find a load in the middle to 2/3 of the way between min and max you're golden.

Very good results using Re19 with 130gr and 180gr bullets in my 300 Win. Mag. Sako 85 Grey Wolf. Good results with other slow burn rate powders - IMR4350, H4350, IMR4831, IMR7828 and H1000.

For a heavyweight bullet, Woodleigh makes a 240gr. A 1:10 twist is required to properly stabilize this bullet according to their loading manual. I get acceptable accuracy with this bullet in my Sako 85 which has a 1:11 twist.

Thanks guys. I guess I should have clarified earlier. My brother is very experienced in reloading and has done a lot of research. I'm just curious as to what others are using. Thanks again!!

By evidence of your dies, I like your style!

If you stay under 3000 FPS then any cheap bullet will probably work well. When you start going over 3000FPS you will want to use the high end bullets that cost a buck each. If you are loading for 180 grain and bigger bullets those Sierras should serve you well.
