I used to consume a barrel a year.
A chome moly barrel (blue) slowly erodes at the throat. The rifling gets shallower and the throat gets longer. Accuracy slowly deteriorates.
A stainless barrel wears very differently. To the naked eye it looks like there is no wear at all. With a borescope, you can see little cracks in the throat area. Over time, there are more cracks and they get deeper. Accuracy remains the same. Then, after a shot, a piece of metal between some cracks flakes off. Accuracy is gone.
On average, a stainless barrel lasts about twice as long as a CM barrel.
Stainless barrels last longer, but still burnout. My 22-250Ackly would only last about 1000 rounds.
