I have a chance at buying a parker hale deluxe in .300 ultra mag. I already have two other parkers in 30/06 and 300 win mag. I have never tried a .300 ultra mag before and am curious about this chambering. Is there a big difference between the 300 win mag versus the 300 ultra mag? Any info would be appreciated.

A few extra fps and a few more ft-lbs of recoil.

What's the application?

A few more fps and a lot more recoil and noise. I used a custom .300 RUM on a cull, but after 100 rounds concluded that it was too much of a good thing, too much noise and too much heat. In a carry it for a week and shoot it once scenario it would be better, but I don't think its worth it. I continue to use mine because I like the rifle, but it will be rebarrelled to something else when the barrel is done.

The real question here is whether you are a reloader or not. If you are, load some 300 WM level loads....and some full blown Ultra long range loads.

If you are not a loader, dont have long range hunting shots...the animals wont be any less dead with a 300WM. I have a ultra in a Kliengunther, awesome rig....heavy as allllll getttt outttt...so a beanfield stand rifle.

I liked the one I had. A Remington 700 LSS. Sold it and wish I hadn't. Kept my dies and brass though. I guess I'm not completely over the RUM. I will have another.

The one difference between the two for me, is the feed angle out of the magazine. The 300WM is long and fairly tapered. The 300UM is intentionally short and fat. If something will go wrong with stripping the round out of the magazine and past the feed rails, I'd think it would be the short fat one. Yeah, the companies have figured these things out, but maybe not as well if it is a rebarrel.

my only experience with a 300 RUM was a friendly shooting competition among friends.
guy with the RUM told me my 30-06 is a 300yrd gun tops

so we took them out to 600yrds. well I did.

unpleasant to shoot. their was a small crater in the dirt under the barrel after a few rounds.

Not sure if the gains are worth it.

Did shoot a 300WBY and really liked it

You've confused the RUM with the SAUM or WSM. Definitely not a short and fat cartridge.

I really like my Ultra-Mag! With a brake it is pleasant to shoot, lots of HP to push the big 215-230gn hybrids, non-belted cartridge. The only down side I have is the selection of Brass, though I hear the Hornaday Brass is decent.

I personally prefer my 300 rum over a 300 win mag, It gets up to 200 fps more velocity with most heavy bullets( 180 grain and up) and is generally very accurate in most of the rifles Ive owned. If you dont shoot heavy bullets there isnt a real reason to go to the 300 rum. It does kick harder then the 300 win mag so if your recoil sensitive you might like to put a break on it.

My only question would be how used is it?
300RUM equals a bigger gas tank on the same bore as anything 30 cal. so that equals more throat erosion and less barrel life.
If the price reflects the usage then fill you boots.

As far as recoil, what would the 300 ultra compare too? I will reload once I get some dies.

My 300 Rum is in a heavy rifle with a merc tube and a break......not bad at all. 270 ish.

But the recoil of my 375 Rum ...pre break...was a M Forker. Completely at a different level from a H & H. Sharp crack and knock u on your keester ....as compared to a long rolling boom. An acquired taste.

Recoil is going to be much worse with heavy projectile, no break, light rifle, factory pad. If you get one....think the jump from 30-06 to 300 WM....that much and a bit more again.

Have to agree with the heavy bullets....180 gr and up.

I have a Rem Sendero in 300 RUM and a Ruger MKII in 300 WM. The difference in recoil is minimal, both give a good, but bearable "push" verses a hard kick (like my Sako Finnlight in 300WSM does). The Sendero is about a lb or two heavier and maybe better balanced. Both recoil pads have been upgraded to Limbsavers. The difference is performance in minimal IMHO, as well. Either one takes moose and elk as well as the other. I believe the 300 RUM is a better, more modern case design (beltless mag, with good neck length) and has the potential for better inherent accuracy. Finally I wouldn't own a 300 RUM if I didn't reload due to the huge cost difference in the ammo. It takes roughly 20% more powder which is the only cost difference to the reloader once you own the brass.

Only shot one cow elk trotting at 500 yards with a buddies Corlaine custom gun and a shovelful of RE#25 launching a 168gr" Burger"after my son planted another cow with it standing at 600.Recoil because of gun weight and brake was not noticeable. This was more of a bench/target gun built on a Borden action.
