I bought a 300WM for moose and elk, the one year i took it out after deer was the year I realized that 180gr Hornady SST's @ ~3000FPS was too much. That poor white-tail almost lost a leg... after the bullet went through the breadbasket. Deer just kinda dropped though. Those same rounds work wonders on Moose though, hell of a lot more umph than 130gr .270win.

That poor Whitetail? Lol you killed it, I don't think it cares too much about the leg at this point...

A premium bullet that's designed to hold together better is advised in the high speed magnums.

I have to question this....... if you take any chambering out for a deer and don't execute a "trough the ribcage", boiler room shot you are going to experience damage.....

The most "damaged" deer I ever shot was a situation similar to yours with similar results..... the cartridge was a .243......
