Long story but ended up with a 300 wm in a winchester mod 70 xtr rifle. Really awesome shape only 9 rounds since new. I need some opinions to save me some time for my new rifle loads. I reload speer BT game kings in 165 for my 30-06 and use them for everything from yotes to moose with 100% recovery rate. They are the most accurate in my ott6 out of the 150's-180's line I tryed and it took me a while to get there. Is the 300wm going to be as effective with 165's for everthing. I took a look at some ballistic charts the 165's seem to hold their energy as well as 180's and their speed as well as 150's. True life isn't on a chart, anybody else have good luck 165's in their 300wm. If so which bullets. If not where do you suggest I start 180's, 150's something else?. Thanx in advance for your time.

I have had great luck with my .300 win mag using Barnes TSX triple shock 165 gr. I use federal and win brass. Win magnum primers. Reloader 22. I started with 71 grains and worked up to 73.5 grains. I used a chrono 2 days ago at the range and they were averaging 3040 fps. I got groups (3 shot) of 1.1", .99", .95" and .89". My last group was 1.25" but the barrel was a little too hot. Anyhow, I am happy with this load for my uses as a hunting load. I see moose, caribou, bears (grizzly/black) wolverine, wolves, and a few more animals up here so I am happy with that. I am sure I could mess abit more to get closer groups, but I dont think its necessary. TSX bullets arent cheap, nor is any other reloading components. I have cheaper calibers to shoot for fun at the range.

You are sort of asking a hunting question, but the biggest advantage the 300win has over the 30-06 is in its ability to make heavy bullets useful.

The 200gr Partition or Accubond acts similar to a 338 on moose and elk.
The 165 Speer you liked so much in your 30-06 can and does come appart at 300win impact velocities.

If you feel the need to shoot light hunting bullets I suggest the Barnes TSX or something similar that will stay together.
