300 winmag reload reccomendations

I am sure you have all read the stories on forums about a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy whose neighbor's dad's friend shot a elk with a ELD X and it apparently failed. Truth to most of those stories are people simply don't read the box. Hornady recommends optimal performance at less than 2700fps. That being said, it is a long range bullet so you typically will be well below that. But the folks mentioned above take these bullets and run them like a hot rod.... running a 162 grain out the barrel at 3200 fps then shoot a moose at 50 yards and wonder why it failed.


Running a 212 grain at 2850fps, you are already under the 2700 or darn close to it by 100 yards. So again truth is people need to use the tool how it was designed to be used. Don't use a hammer as a screwdriver and then complain that is makes a terrible screwdriver.
 
300 WM is so yesterday....all the cool kids are shooting 300 PRC.
Those bullets should work fine...RL22 has always been accurate in any of my WM's.
 
I find no fault in the original post where the choice is a 200 grain bullet in his 300 WM. His question was in regards to a choice of powder.

Suggestions about other bullets and cartridges cloud the issue.

A quick check of the Nosler book suggests their most accurate load used H4831 at MAX. H4831 would be a great starting point.
 
Yup the guys already hit the points, the short mags in the tikka with longer bullets will have you seating back into the case and taking a decent bit of capacity for what a 300 win mag is designed to do. Could try some faster powders like H4831 that don't require as much to get up to speed.

I have loaded for several tikkas in 300 win mag and had good luck with 180 and 200 grain Accubonds. If you wanna go ELD-X they are great bullets too just be a little wary on short range expansion above 2900 fps. They definitely get the job done very well out at any kind of moderate-long range distance. Just don't expect them to crush a moose leg bone and pass through both sides at 3000fps impact velocity or anything. With that said everything I have seen shot with them just drops or doesn't get far. Moose at 200m last year broke a rib on each side and imbedded halfway through the heavy shoulder ball joint in a perfect little mushroom (162 gr ELD-X out of a Tikka 7mag) Moose took two steps and dropped, lungs were jelly. There are a lot of guys say monolithic(Barnes) bullets or nothing and I can't seem to get on board that train when most everything else works, is cheaper, and has better BC's lol. I would probably bet the 178ELD-X will work better for you. What you gain in velocity over the 200s (loaded that short) will probably work out better in your gun. Pick up a box of each 178 and 200 and try both?

I’ve had great luck with the 200gr ELD-X with imr 7828ssc and Reloader22. The Reloader22 produced better results but 7828ssc was still more than acceptable out of my Savage 110 High Country.
 
Don't shoot the 300 Win Mag anymore, but when I did, the 200 Partition and Norma MRP were the ticket.

In my #1 308 Norma Mag, I chase the 210 LRAB with a big charge of Retumbo. Flirts with 2950 and is a
sub-moa load. Shot a Bull Moose at around 120 yards in 2019. Bullet exited and moose was down quickly.

I have used IMR 7828, H4831, Reloder 19 & 22 with 200 grain bullets. All worked fine. FWIW, I am not a
big fan of the ELD-X either. You never know when you will get that close-up shot that really tests the
integrity of a bullet. Dave.
 
I'm getting good results from plain boring IMR4831 and 200gr ELDX in a Tikka T3x 300wm @2790fps. I know it's not the best construction for a bullet but if you're going to use a conventional, go with heavy for calibre bullets.
