300 WM or 280 for a Roosevelt elk?

My self the decision would be made based on what rifle had the best optics and was most likely to be in my hands while carrying it.
While not my first choice, if the Winchester powerpoints 180 grain I'd be happy to kill an elk with them if they shot good. I personally feel that powerpoints, and the 180 grain .30 cal in particular, are among the more underrated bullets out there.

I doubt that the success of your hunt will depend on the choice of caliber, but I'll
vote 300 anyway.

The .300s are like a loud bully that enjoys slapping things around, BUT........it's really good at slapping things around.

the last red deer i ve seen taken was with a 280 and one shot of 150 grains was enough ... i ve taken a few with 7x64 (160 grains np), 300 hh and weatherby (180 grains np) and 9.3x62 (oryx and alaska 286 grains). they were roughly the weight of the one you are going to hunt so pick up the medecine you like both will work ...

If you are sure you wouldn't forget your ammo at home and try to find some at Bob's corner store at the corner of middle and nowhere streets I would go with the 280 just because it's "cool". :)

I hunt eastern moose with a 7.08 so never really saw the need for anything starting with 3 and ending with magnum unless maybe it's growls and has really really big fangs.
