Here's a question for those of you who might be familiar with both of these great calibers. How would you compare the actual killing power of a 180-gr TBBC Federal High Energy .300 WM bullet as compared to a 225-gr. regular TBBC or Swift A-Frame in .338 WM? Both have a muzzle velocity of around 3800 ft.-lb.

All info welcome!

Wel, for bigger critters the 338 may have an edge, but really, a 300 wiht good bullets is gonna put everythign down hard.

Only reaosn I woud maybe opt for the 338 is if I was targeting grizzlies and moose the most.

the 338 will give you more insurance on big bear and bad angles, but the 300 doesnt give up much in terms of killing power. for the average hunter, the 300 (or 30-06 for that matter) is a much better choice, when using premium bullets, like a Nosler Prospertition

I have seen a few Moose killed with both the 300WM and the 338WM... but the ones that got knocked off their feet were hit with the .338WM.
There is a lot to be said for knocking a Moose down not just hitting it in the vitals and waiting for it to expire.
I gotta go with Gatehouse on this one... if your hunting the largest game a .338 has the jam to bounce them.

I found though that the 338 may have more punch on the shoulder, dosen't matter when you are in hunting situations but it might if you are going to do lots of bench shooting. Although alot has to do with the weight of the rifle too.

The 338win hands down with 225gr. @2900fps = 4201ft/lbs. It slams critters down with authority :D . The .338 has a great selection of bullets and even most of the basic cup/core bullets are built tough.

Think of the 300win as a 30-06 plus 200fps. Bullets at higher velocities actually penetrate less. Most hunters can't take advantage of the longer effective range anyway.

Lemme go fill my coffee cup... bet this one is going to get interestin'.... :p

Ill take a bottle of water and 8 tylenols while yer up :D

I know lets compair a daisy 177 to a crossman .22 , maybe someone could drift the neighbours dog in the a$$ and let us know how the recoil is compaired to how the dog reacts in the garbage can :p

I use a 338win mag, my buddy the 300win mag, they both do the job on moose. His has destroyed 2 Bushnell elite scopes with recoil. We have fished several of his moose out of swamps and beaver dams because they have "wandered" after being shot. I don't know if he is blessed with uniquely tough moose that refuse to lay down, but I like my 338!

they way i look at it , the 300 is just a high speed longer ranged 308- yea, know that's going to get some of you mad, but that's my take- the 338 on the other hand starts off at a heavier bullet, and basically gives gives you about another 50/100 grains of bullet to play with, which you may need if you're tagging the bigger, meaner beasties- but i wish speer would bring back the 275- that's the best slug for the 338- better b/c than the 250, plus the added weight, and it fits in my mag, which the 300 doesn't

At 300 yards with a proper shot placement the mooose will likely go dowwn in the same spot if shot with either.
HOWEVER, I wouldn't wanna put money on anyone'ss shot plaacement!!
