Latest Rifleshooter magazine, discusses this very issue. 300 Win Mag brass cheap compared to Weatherby brass, same for factory ammo. I like to spend money going hunting rather than foe expensive brass. Still sort of a free world , I'd pick the one that rocks your world. My old 300 Win Mag has killed a bunch of critters out to 500 yds, works good enough for me.

That's great if you can actually find .300 WM brass. The only stuff I have seen in quite a long time is Nosler, which isn't exactly cheap. I also doubt the difference in brass price is going to interfere with most peoples' finances to the extent that they can't go hunting.
I shoot quite a few 30 magnums, from the 300 SAUM to the 300 RUM. 300 H&H, 300 WM, 300 Wby, are pretty close in velocity. The Wby is generally a little faster. The RUM is faster yet but hurts more to shoot. Once you get into the 30-378, 30-416 and a few other wildcats you really start to move those bullets quicker, but it costs a lot more to play. Oh, and the 308 NM is still my favorite. FWIW - dan
A fellow NM fan! Nice! I have always thought the 308 NM fit better amongst the WM family than the 300 WM does itself. But once again like my previous post, it's just my opinion.

My 308 Norma shoots every bullet weight very well, its a very un-fussy cartridge and probably the easiest rifle I have to find a good load for...
When you mention the 308 Norma Mag, you can count me in. At last count, I believe I had 5 rifles so chambered, including a Custom rifle built by Leeper.
I've owned pretty well all of the "big" 30's, with the exception of the 30-378 Wby. They are quite capable of doing whatever I need them to do.
Anytime you start driving 180 grain bullets in the 3100+ area, or 200's in the 3000 fps range, you have a pretty effective hunting partner.
I have taken several head of big game, such as Moose & Elk, at ranges that at best could be described as "way out there" lol. Never had my 308NM let me down.
The 300 Wby, is a tad faster, all other things being equal, but burns considerably more charcoal to get there. Not a biggie, of course, but a factor nonetheless.
One other factor that is worth noting, is that, while not quite as widespread as the 300 Winchester mag, The Weatherby 300 is quite popular, and commonly available.

What about the 300 h&h or the 308 norma mag?
I've shot and loaded for several of the common .300's. H&H, WSM, SAUM, WIN, WBY, RUM.
My thinking on the WBY vs WIN is get the one you want. There is not a big enough difference in performance between the two to really make a difference while hunting, especially in this day and age of LRF's turrets, multi crosshair reticles and high BC bullets.
The WIN is probably a bit more practical, but that's up tot he shooter.

I have 2 300WM's and a 300Wby. So far the 300Wby has shot the best out to 300yds. I was able to shoot a really nice 3 shot 1.3" group at 300yds using 180gr Hornady SST's. Rifle is a Weatherby Vanguard VG2 synthetic. I my mind Howa has always produced decent barreled actions. One of my 300WM's is a S&W 1500 Deluxe (S&W commissioned Howa to produce a line of barreled actions in the early to mid 80's if I'm not mistaken). It shoots exceptionally well. Everyone has there own personal opinions as to what is best which is good. You have to decide which works best for you. Big thing to keep in mind is availability of ammo and/or reloading components, and are you able to handle the calibre of choice effectively.
I have had most of the 30 magnums as well (300wsm, 300wm, 300wby, 300ultra, 30-378) and IMHO I only like 300 wm's when they have a 3.6" mag box. I just got a new 300 wm with a long mag box and I have a 300 wby on a mkv 5 (also lots of room) and I am confident there won't be much difference between the two once I'm done developing a load for the 300 wm, bullets seated out as far as they will go and using norma brass.
