Buddy of mine picked up a factory box of Winchester Power Max(new red box) the other day in 300wsm 180 gr.
10 out of the 20 brass after being fired the neck areas split open(small lil slits...some had one slit, other had as many as 4 slits all the way around the neck)
Just wondering what would cause this? Poor batch of brass? Loaded to heavy from factory?
Never seen it before, just curious(kinda scary too lol)

P.S.
Dont think it would matter, but rifle is a brand new Savage 116...

Brass not being annealed in the neck area from the factory or potentially too loose of chamber are my guesses. Also could be overloaded(look for pressure signs on primer and head of brass like flat primers and ejector marks). Take the ammo back as that is dangerous to shoot or if it's the first shots out of a new gun, maybe try a different ammo and see if it's the chamber(or get a smith to check it out).

A good friend loads at my house, this spring he bought a bag of WW 300 mag brass, about 10 cases had what looked like little scratches that turned into the same style cracks on the first firing. Quality control problem from Winchester.
