My dilemma was my custom 6.5 PRC that is pushing the 156 gr berger tips, that I practice with out to 1000 m, or my newly aquired ruger #1 in 450 BM that I practice with out to 350m. Yes the areas I sometimes hunt can and do present themselves with longer shots, and depending on current site conditions I have to make the call to shoot or not. I'll just leave it at that.
Well the 6.5 sat in camp all week and was playing my back up if need be. Didn't even get to see daylight, besides at the beginning of the trip when I opened the case to remove the other rifle that was travelling with it.
I exclusively carried my 450 BM, and got to use it a few times on my last trip. That will be for another story though.
It now gets the nod on my next trip, leaving tomorrow. It is now my newest love! The custom 6.5 will sit in camp as a back up again. Too boot, some freshly loaded 290gr solid copper tips.
Of the two you listed, the one that you can shoot comfortably with out to the ranges you will need, and the one that you can follow up quickly with a 2nd and if need 3rd shot. I specifically practice this at the range, especially now using a single shot, and well let me just say this, it pays off when you really need it and have no time to think and just react. not much different with a bolt action as well, and not too many actually practice this when they can.
Really, the moose will not know the difference of what hit them, if you hit them right!
