300 WSM or a 7mm Rem mag???

is the .270winchester not an option for you?

long action, high velocity, 2015 modern bullets and I assume you can shoot accurate under pressure of a high country sheep hunt to place a shot in the vitals at the range you stalked into, beit 200 or 500, your call.

I know with mine, an with suitable bullet I could kill a goat at 400, with more practise I'd slip one into a fallow deer (goat sized) at 500 an that would be far enough.. that's with extreme practise a new scope bla bla.... but im just saying... its capable?

I didnt consider the 270 beceause I already have one. I think it does as good of a job as a 7mm rem mag

One time a buddy from Swan Hills, came down to Whitecourt, to shoot with me. I had my M700 .30-06, with 165gr BTSP handloads. They average 2850fps MV.

Buddy had a M700 also, in 7mmRM, and he had 162gr factory ammo. He figured they were smoking 3000fps or so...

I had my Chrony setup, and after a bit, he asked if I wanted to shoot his 'Big 7'. Yeah, why not?

So since I had the Chrony setup anyway, I figured I might as well check the muzzle velocity. Those factory 162gr rounds averaged 2780fps. Was he ever surprised, and actually bummed out, to learn that his so-called hot rod, was actually slower than the .30-06 (albeit with handloaded ammo).

The 7mmRM is not so flat shooting as people like to think, and the .30-06 is a superior cartridge period, in my opinion. Especially with the variety of quality bullets you can handload it with.

Edit to add: Oh, one other thing: his rifle had either a 24" or 26" barrel too, and my .30-06 had the stock 22" barrel, and his still couldn't keep up...

ha ha, Classic Demonical!

I think a lot of people would be a little surprised if everyone owned a chrono and instead of worrying if the 300wm or 7rm or 300saum was 'better' an realised, as someone said, that cartridge over lap is very real scenario with 90% of our hunting cartridges we nit pick :)

for some reason I had in my head that my 308 was doin approx. 2800.... til I re read the figures an took a bit off for short barrel, for a ball park of higher 2600s LOL still doin the job though, will be chrono-ing everything shortly this winter.

Depending on bullet and powder combinations the 7mm rem mag can reach 3100 fps with a162 grain bullet and then shoots a fair bit flatter then your 30-06. I ran into this with my first 7mm Rem mag with 63 grains of RE22 and a 162 grain sst. The book said it was suposed to be going 3000fps, but once I bought a chronograph I found out that it only produced a dissapointing 2800FPS. Now I used retumbo with 162 grain bullets and get 3082 FPS, with 175 grain sierras I get 2910 fps using 7828. When handloading a chronograph is sure a great tool to have on hand.

Chronographs spread so much unhappiness, some revelations and some out-right lies. Work of the devil I say.

To be fair the 7mm RM when properly loaded will easily push over 3000 fps w/ 162s.

One can argue which one is a superior cartridge all day, as it's a personal choice. One cannot argue though that the 7mm RM is flatter shooting. Sleeker bullets at higher velocities in every case when you compare apples to apples (as in hand loads to handloaded or factory to factory.)
